Position Summary:
As part of the WorkCare Incident Intervention team, contract physicians help support WorkCare's 24/7 Incident Intervention program. The primary responsibility of this position is to facilitate appropriate and timely health care with the focus on employee return-to-work and return to maximum functionality. This is accomplished by conducting telephonic consultations with the injured worker. The physician conducts screening evaluations of workplace injuries and provides an assessment and guidance to the injured worker. This allows the employee to receive the right care at the right time in the right setting.
Our Occupational physicians have knowledge of workplace hazards, the workers' compensation systems, as well as clinical medicine and may assist clients by contacting the receiving clinic or emergency department to be a resource to the receiving medical facility. Peer to peer conversations can help relay clinical information in form of a hand off and communicate other medical concerns, red flags in the case, or work-relatedness concerns. We also may receive information regarding the outcome of the clinical visit that can be communicated with the client (i.e. work-restrictions or other OSHA recordable results).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Contract Physicians utilizes evidence-based medical guidelines employs best practices that require early intervention and setting of realistic expectations for recovery and return to work. This position is responsible for performing injury management consultations, peer-to peer communication, initial injury intake, and other client services.
- Injury Management “On-Call”
- Triage employees to appropriate level of care based on symptoms, history, photos, and clinical judgement.
- Provide first aid suggestions, if able to keep at self-care.
- If clinic visit is recommended, provide recommendations of clinic type and timing.
- Provide timely peer-to-peer calls.
- Provider to Provider contact to discuss injured employee and/or injured employee return to work.
- Document all patient transactions in accordance with company policies and procedures in appropriate electronic format as required.
- Use appropriate systems per policies and procedures to provide service during scheduled shift.
- Triage employees to appropriate level of care based on symptoms, history, photos, and clinical judgement.
- Assure that an alternate physician is available to cover if unable to fulfill a scheduled shift, unless an emergency.
- Communicate and work with medical staff to ensure coordinated efforts for the provision of high-quality medical triage and client service.
- Assist Clinical Lead in identifying, analyzing and resolving work problems.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of existing clinical methods and procedures and suggest improvements.
- Comply with ethical, legal & professional issues.
- Comply with applicable regulations and with corporate policies and procedures.
- Comply with quality assurance for all medical issues and assist in the solution of any medical problems.
Qualifications
- Education and Experience
- Degree of Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) from a U.S. accredited institution.
- Actively licensed as M.D or D.O. in good standing with state medical board.
- Clinical experience with prior emergency department or urgent care or occupational medicine required.
- Experience with Workers' Compensation preferred.
- Board certification preferred.
- Strong clinical knowledge with the ability to be trained in Occupational Health.
- Telephonic, telemedicine or virtual care experience preferred.
- Skills and Competencies
- Knowledge of professional medical practices related to the management of work-related illness and injuries
- Knowledge of organizational and medical policies, regulations and procedures.
- Must have positive telephone interaction skills including ability to ask open-ended questions to identify problems and focus conversation for goal directed and time limited conversation.
- Must be able to demonstrate the ability of maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
- Strong critical thinking skills; problem solving, and decision making.
- Strong time management, organizational, and follow-through skills.
- Skill in developing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the general public.
- Ability to react calmly, objectively and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to communicate clearly with patients, staff and clients.
- Bi-lingual (Spanish speaking) preferred.
- Computer Skills
- Must be competent in computer operating system environment, Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Teams) and learn other software as needed.
- Physical Demands
- Requires sitting for long periods of time, working at a desk.
- Some bending and stretching could be required.
- Working under stress and use of computer/phone required.
- Manual dexterity required for use of computer keyboard.
Work From Home Requirements
- Contract Physicians must work in a location that can maintain reasonable connectivity to power and internet.
- All Incident Intervention Contract Physicians working from home are expected to adhere to the following requirements prior to working from home:
- Must meet all IT requirements as outlined by the IT Department.
- Work environment must be free from background noise and distraction.
- Must dedicate their full attention to their job duties during scheduled working hours.
- Must be able to meet the following privacy and security requirements, as per HIPAA regulations:
- home office must be in an enclosed private room with 4 walls.
- home office must have a closed-door during business hours.
- home office must be removed from normal foot traffic.
- during working hours no unauthorized personnel are allowed in the home office.
This is a 1099 independent contractor position.
The hours for this position are 4:00pm - 6:00am PST with rotating weekends and holidays in the scheduled workweek.
Weekend shifts are typically scheduled in 6-hour shifts.
