We are committed to making a difference for our neighbors, friends, and family and our vision is to be a trusted, nationally-recognized leader of innovative, collaborative community health.    Employment Status: PRN  Working Hours: As needed Shift: 1st shift Position Reports to: Director of Surgery                         Department Description:  Wilson Health's Surgical Services Department performs more than 4,000 inpatient and outpatient surgeries and other procedures annually in the fields of gynecology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, general surgery, ear, nose and throat surgery, urology, podiatry, plastic surgery and endoscopy, as well as radiology interventional procedures. The department is staffed by board-certified surgeons and anesthesiologists, highly skilled registered nurses, surgical technologists, sterile processing technicians, medical assistants and X-ray technologists.   Job Summary:  Cares for patients in the Operating Room/Endoscopy under the direction of the Registered Nurse and supervision of medical staff.  Works to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures ensuring the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.   Essential Duties & Responsibilities:   Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment necessary for each individual surgical procedure.
  • Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
  • Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
  • Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of sterile technique by monitoring and maintaining the sterile field, and following policies and procedures for sterilization of instruments and supplies.
Effectively functions as the scrub person for the surgical procedure:
  • Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
  • Scrubs, gowns, gloves
  • Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure
  • Performs appropriate counts with the circulator at a minimum prior to the operation and before the incision is closed
    • Knows legal responsibilities and the reason for 100% accurate sponge counts.
    • Verbalizes procedure for an incorrect sponge count.
  • Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistant
  • Helps in draping the sterile field
  • Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure
  • Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedure
  • Properly handles all surgical specimens
  • Prepares sterile dressings
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
  • Assists other members with terminal cleaning of operating room
  • Assists in prepping room for the next patient
  • Obtains appropriate sterile and unsterile items needed for procedure
  • Opens sterile supplies
  • Actively participates in “Time Out”
  • Assists with patient transfers as needed
  • Assesses comfort and safety measures and provides verbal and tactile reassurances to the patient
  • Anticipates additional supplies needed for the procedure
  • Properly handles specimen
  • Secures dressing after incision is closed
Role of Second Scrub:
  • Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon
  • Sponges or suctions the surgical site
  • Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon
Qualifications:   Required:
  • Graduation from an accredited school of Surgical Technology.
Preferred:
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistants (NBSTSA).
  • Membership with Association of Surgical Technologists (AST)
  • BLS
