We are committed to making a difference for our neighbors, friends, and family and our vision is to be a trusted, nationally-recognized leader of innovative, collaborative community health.    Employment Status: PRN Hours:  Varies as needed Shift: 1st shift Position Reports to:  Director of Surgical Services           Department Description: Wilson Health's Surgical Services Department performs more than 4,000 inpatient and outpatient surgeries and other procedures annually in the fields of gynecology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, general surgery, ear, nose and throat surgery, urology, podiatry, plastic surgery and endoscopy, as well as radiology interventional procedures. The department is staffed by board-certified surgeons and anesthesiologists, highly skilled registered nurses, surgical technologists, sterile processing technicians, medical assistants and X-ray technologists.   Job Summary:  Under the direction of the Surgery Manager/ Designee/ RN performs duties necessary to assist the surgical team in providing safe patient care through environmental preparation for procedures, patient transportation, and assistance with supply management.     Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintains privacy and confidentiality of all appropriate information.
  • Provides care based on awareness of patient rights, ethical concepts, respect for life, dignity, human worth, and the individuality of the human being.
    • Identifies physical and emotional needs of patients and provides support and communicates to the RN as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates accountability for completing work on time.
    • Assists in the preparation of the Surgery/PACU units.
    • Assists in the preparation of the surgery carts for OR and PACU.
    • Orders and maintains linen supply in the sub-sterile rooms and blanket warmers stocked
    • Follows policy and procedure for cleaning surgery rooms between cases and at the end of the day.
    • Maintains sharp/needle containers in assigned areas.
    • Prepares OR waste boxes and disposes of OR waste in proper location providing for safety of self, patient, and other personnel
    • Assists with the maintenance and disposal of trash from the Surgery/PACU areas, according to hospital policy.
    • Provides general nursing care. (Positioning and lifting, applying warm blankets)
    • Transports patients to and from Surgery/PACU as needed.
    • Transports specimens to appropriate department when necessary.
    • Assists OR and Anesthesia personnel to provide patient care such as holding for spinals, transfer from cart to OR table, holding limbs for prep, and moving equipment.
    • Cleans the physicians and nurses lounges daily.
    • Accurately documents on the daily and monthly cleaning logs.
    • At the end of the day's schedule, cleans each operating room/endoscopy, sub-sterile rooms, utility area, corridors, sterile supply room, storage areas.
  • Completes cleaning supply requisitions and obtains supplies from storeroom.
  • Replenishes supplies of soap, towels, and other disposable items.
  • Restocks anesthesia supplies in OR
  • Maintains adequate amount of cleaning supplies for department and insures supplies are ready for "on call" and weekend cases.
  • Maintains adequate trash bag supply for liners and disposes in proper receptacles according to hospital policy.
  • Participates in economical utilization of supplies and equipment.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and collaboration skills with the perioperative team members.
    • Reports to the RN changes in patient condition or behavior of patient and any unusual incidents.
    • Takes accurate messages and relays information in a timely manner.
    • Greets patient, family, or significant other and is helpful, informative.
    • Explains transport routine
    • Gives information about the Surgery Waiting Area and conference rooms.
  • Cooperates with other personnel to maintain effective relationships, both interdepartmental and intradepartmental.
    • Receives and communicates necessary information to and from nursing unit personnel with accurate awareness of what must be communicated to an RN.
Qualifications:
  • Will acquire Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 6 months of hire and maintain certification.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • One to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
