Position Reports to: Orthopedic Center Nurse Manager
Department Description: Wilson Health's Center for Orthopedics is the region's destination for high quality, state-of-the-art orthopedic procedures and services. The modern center is equipped with 6 dedicated pre- and postoperative surgical bays, and is staffed by leading board-certified orthopedic surgeons specializing in comprehensive and specialty care.
Job Summary: Cares for patients in the Operating Room under the direction of the Registered Nurse and supervision of medical staff. Works to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures ensuring the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment necessary for each individual surgical procedure.
- Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
- Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
- Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of sterile technique by monitoring and maintaining the sterile field, and following policies and procedures for sterilization of instruments and supplies.
- Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
- Scrubs, gowns, gloves
- Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure
- Performs appropriate counts with the circulator at a minimum prior to the operation and before the incision is closed
- Knows legal responsibilities and the reason for 100% accurate sponge counts.
- Verbalizes procedure for an incorrect sponge count.
- Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistant
- Helps in draping the sterile field
- Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure
- Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedure
- Properly handles all surgical specimens
- Prepares sterile dressings
- Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
- Assists other members with terminal cleaning of operating room
- Assists in prepping room for the next patient
- Obtains appropriate sterile and unsterile items needed for procedure
- Opens sterile supplies
- Actively participates in “Time Out”
- Assists with patient transfers as needed
- Assesses comfort and safety measures and provides verbal and tactile reassurances to the patient
- Anticipates additional supplies needed for the procedure
- Properly handles specimen
- Secures dressing after incision is closed
- Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon
- Sponges or suctions the surgical site
- Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon
- Graduation from an accredited school of Surgical Technology.
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistants (NBSTSA).
- Membership with Association of Surgical Technologists (AST)
