POSITION: Charge Registered Nurse
SCHEDULE: Full-Time 3 12-Hour Day Shift
FACILITY: Douglas County Correctional Center
LOCATION: Omaha, NE

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Charge RN is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Also directs and guides patient teaching activities and ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing. Utilizes electronic medical record system as applicable throughout the scope of duties and responsibilities.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
• Applies knowledge of illnesses, injuries and diseases and use available resources during the assessment process to obtain health history.
• Assesses physical, psychological and psychosocial dimensions of patients within the health care unit and, as necessary, in the housing units.
• Provides a written assessment of patient on admission, during confinement and on discharge as requested.
• Summarizes assessment data and make a triage decision which is documented and communicated to other patient care providers.
• Plans and implements an individual treatment program utilizing available treatment protocols.
• Supervises nursing personnel; provides direction and guidance to nursing staff.
• Creates a cohesive work environment using effective team work & communication
• Utilizes referral process to appropriate health care providers as necessary.
• Applies knowledge and utilizes available resources in planning care and patient education.
• Implements clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Intervenes with proper techniques, procedures and safety precautions utilizing aseptic technique and infection control to meet individual needs of patients. Implements medical plan through administering medications in accordance with physician's orders.
• Intervenes by administering medications according to proper techniques and procedures, including IV therapy, and all other approved routes of administration.
• Utilizes pharmacology knowledge and available resources to include drug reaction and overdose information in administering medications.
• Implements medical plans through obtaining diagnostic tests in accordance with physician's orders. Intervene by obtaining body fluid specimens and performing EKG's using proper techniques and procedures.
• Assists the Physician or Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner in medical or minor surgical procedures as necessary and/or requested to meet individual needs of patients.
• Consults as necessary and communicate information with other nurses, Physician Assistants/Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, Correctional Officers, etc.
• Develops and maintains professional relationships with staff, patients, visitors, and medical and correctional personnel.
• Accepts staffing assignments and performs other related duties as required or assigned by the Director of Nursing/Health Services Administrator.
• Develops and maintains an awareness of needed improvements in patient care, procedures, equipment and supplies and make recommendations to supervisors
• As requested, assists in the presentation of in-service education.
• Promotes quality assurance standards by participating in the quality of chart audits.
• Maintains the confidentiality of inmate records.
• Makes suggestions for improving work conditions to the Director of Nursing and Health Services Administrator.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements list the minimum to qualify. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
LICENSING: Current, unrestricted Nebraska Registered Nurse (RN) License
CERTIFICATION: Current CPR Certification
EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Associate's Degree required; Bachelors' Degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum one to two (1-2) years of clinical, supervisory experience; correctional nursing experience a plus
