Position:  PACE/ABLE Tutor Advisor

Position FTE:  .875

Pay Grade:  7

Starting Wage:  $19.19

Days Per Year:  202

Shift hours: 7:30am - 3:00

Job Summary: 
Under the direct supervision and close and frequent proximity of a certified teacher performs instructional support services. The tutor advisor should be prepared to work with students in need of acadmic intervention, including some who are on long-term out-of-school suspension.

Specific job responsibilities relevant for this position include:
The following characteristics and skills are desired for any interested candidate:

  • Provide one-on-one tutoring if such tutoring is scheduled at a time when a student would not receive instruction from a teacher.
  • Assists with classroom management, such as organizing instructional and other materials.  Compiles and maintains accurate student records on attendance, testing results, student progress, achievement and other factors related to students' schooling.
  • Maintains high expectations of student behavior  
  • Provide information, materials and instructional support to classroom instructors.
  • Conduct parent involvement activities. May be asked to contact parents/legal guardians by telephone, in writing and/or home visits to encourage their active participation in the student's formal education. Coordinates parent/family school functions at the school site. Attends meetings and parent conferences to provide information and facilitate communication between students/parents and instructors/school administration.
  • Provide support in a library or media center.
  • Provide instructional support services under the direct supervision of a teacher.
  • May be required to provide additional support functions including:  preparing items for the program newsletter, school announcements and bulletins; and/or assist in organizing special events or guest speakers.
  • Conduct progress monitoring assessments and maintain accurate progress monitoring date. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
If the position is a bilingual position: 
  • Conducts initial multiple assessments used to determine bilingual eligibility.  Conducts yearly assessments to determine English language acquisition and adequate yearly progress.
  • Serves as a recruiter, compiles surveys, initiates contacts with eligible students and/or parents and completes initial Certificate of Eligibility
  Knowledge: Completed two years (48 semester credits) of study at an institution of higher education; or obtained as associate's degree or met a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal State or local assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness.)
Skills (position requirements at entry): Ability to maintain effective communication with student and staff  and to function effectively as a team member. Ability to carry out and evaluate the achievement of students after the teacher prepares the lesson and plans the instructional support activities. Ability to test and identify and keep accurate records on new and existing students. Demonstrate adequate level of instructional technology skills. Experience and training workingwith children with diverse backgrounds in an instructional setting.

Licensing Requirements (position requirements at entry): Completed two years (48 semester credits) of study at an institution of higher education; or obtained as associate's degree or met a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal State or local assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness).

Physical Requirements: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces grater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker stands and sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Job Summary: Applicants must be Highly Qualified by the end of the probationary period.  *Highly Qualified means you have met the paraprofessional requirements as defined by No Child Left Behind (NCLB).  
The NCLB minimum requirements for paraprofessionals are defined in NCLB Sections 1119(f) and 1119(c)(1) as:
  • High school diploma or GED, AND
  • Two years of college (at least 48-semester hour credits); or
  • Associate's (or higher) degree; or
  • Pass the Para Pro Assessment and the Paraprofessional Standards Checklist.
