The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UWSMPH) is seeking American Board of Anesthesiology Certified/Eligible faculty candidates for our rapidly growing Division of Critical Care Anesthesiology. Board Certification/Eligibility in Critical Care Medicine is required.
Faculty in the eight-member Division of Critical Care Anesthesiology provide intensivist coverage in the Cardiothoracic Surgical ICU, the Surgical/Trauma ICU and the Medical ICU. Thanks to rapid growth of the transplant and mechanical circulatory device (VAD, ECMO, Total Artificial Heart) programs, our Anesthesia Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) faculty now provide exclusive intensivist coverage in the CT Surgical ICU. The team consists of anesthesiology residents, fellows and advanced practice providers who participate in daily, multidisciplinary ICU rounds where complex cases are discussed at bedside.
UW Health is home to one of the nation's leading organ transplant programs. Our surgeons and physicians are experts in their field. ACCM faculty are called upon to provide world-class care to heart, lung, heart/kidney, heart/liver and heart/lung recipients in the CT Surgical ICU.
UW Health is also dedicated to growing its ECMO program. The current program supports approximately 60 cases per year. As part of UW Health's ECMO Team, ACCM faculty participate in ECMO patient selection and management. Interested faculty will also play an increasing role in the cannulation of ECMO patients. The Division is currently developing ECMO cannulation training modules and will soon share this procedural responsibility with CT surgical colleagues.
The Division of Critical Care Anesthesiology sponsors an ACGME-accredited ACCM Fellowship with two fellows per year. Resident and Fellow education is a core responsibility. Research endeavors are encouraged. Candidates may choose a clinical or academic track and academic rank is based on prior experience. The salary and benefits package is highly competitive.
Founded in 1927 as the first academic anesthesiology program in the country, the UWSMPH Department of Anesthesiology is committed to providing outstanding patient care, educating the next generation of providers and advancing the scientific foundation of our discipline. The current leadership team values diversity, transparency, equity and provider wellness. A Department Wellness Committee is tasked with continually evaluating wellness opportunities and specific endowment funds are dedicated to supporting wellness-related initiatives.
The Department features an outstanding and diverse group of more than 90 clinical faculty, several research faculty, 60 residents and fellows, 85 clinical anesthetists, and many nurses, advanced practice providers and support staff. Clinical sites include University Hospital (a 505-bed quaternary-care facility), American Family Children's Hospital (87 beds), The American Center (a 56-bed satellite hospital) and several ambulatory locations. Clinical specialization includes acute pain, adult multispecialty, ambulatory, cardiac, chronic pain, critical care, neurosurgical, pediatrics, pediatric cardiac, pediatric pain, pediatric transplant, transplant and vascular.
The Department is currently developing UW Health's new, comprehensive Pre-Operative Clinic with the goal of increasing pre-surgical consults from today's 6,000 annual visits to more than 22,000. A new, Global Anesthesiology Program is also in development. This program, and its corresponding endowment, will provide a sustainable commitment to service, education and research in low- and middle-income countries for years to come.
Basic research endeavors in consciousness, neuroscience, genomics and pain are supported by National Institutes of Health funding, endowments and a variety of external sources. A robust clinical research program focuses on regional techniques in acute pain management, airway management, COVID management and medical devices.
The nationally-recognized residency program, ACGME-accredited fellowships (cardiac, critical care and pediatrics) and non-accredited fellowships (acute pain, chronic pain, neurosurgical and transplant) are fostered by a culture of inquiry, teaching and learning. Significant professional investment funds, along with a variety of endowments, professorships and lectureships help support faculty, fellow and resident education and research endeavors.
Frequently ranked as one of the best small cities in the United States, Madison, WI is home to more than 500,000 residents and is the second-largest city in Wisconsin. The state's capitol is a picturesque city flanked by Lakes Mendota and Monona and is home to numerous restaurants, cafes, bookstores, brewpubs and shops. Miles of trails connect Madison - and its 250 parks - to surrounding communities and numerous recreational areas – making it one of the most pedestrian-friendly cities in the country. Madison is home to the Henry Vilas Zoo, the Memorial Union Terrace, the Chazen Museum of Art, the Overture Center for the Arts, the Madison Children's Museum and Camp Randall Stadium. On Saturday mornings from mid-April through early November, Madison hosts the largest producer-only farmer's market in the United States. Madison and its surrounding communities support highly-ranked public school systems and, of course, the University of Wisconsin and its 45,000 students.
