Description
This position is part of the Fire and Life Safety Department and works collaboratively with campus partners to ensure campus compliance with the NFPA Life Safety Code, NFPA Fire Code, International Building and Fire Codes, and applicable state, local, and federal regulations. This involves developing and implementing programs, procedures, and training that contribute to the success of the organization.
The Safety Specialist II, Fire Inspector, will provide support to departmental staff performing fire prevention, fire & life safety inspections, public education, fire investigations, and other assigned duties.
The ideal candidate will be organized, team-oriented, and exhibit a high level of self-motivation, and interpersonal skills, including establishing and maintaining relationships with fellow employees, state/local/county officials, contractors, and the public. Strong applicants will be able to solve problems and resolve conflicts with minimal supervision and will have a working knowledge of policies and regulations (local, state, and federal) surrounding building code regulations.
The ideal candidate will have a background in fire protection systems. The successful candidate will also excel in areas such as communication, continuous learning, customer-focused service, dependability, flexibility, interpersonal skills, leadership, planning and organization, reasoning and problem-solving, and teamwork.
Minimum Education and Experience
BS in a related field. Three (3) or more years of related experience or a combination of education and experience. Should have the ability to carry 50 lbs. and walk extensively. Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver's License and acceptable driving record.

- TCFP Fire Investigator
- TCFP Plans Examiner
- TCFP Fire and Life Safety Educator
- Incident Management Training: ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300, ICS-400, ICS-700, ICS-800
- Knowledge of the following: fire and life safety code compliance, building design practices and procedures, fire protection equipment and systems, exiting systems, construction documents, and reports, methods of construction, NFPA standards, building emergency planning and signage, fire protection appliances and systems used in buildings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform skilled fire prevention, risk reduction, and fire inspection duties.
- Review construction/renovation plans and fire protection system plans for proper adherence to fire and life safety codes and NFPA standards. Ensure adequate permitting and inspections of all processes. Facilitate, coordinate, and track individual plan review/approvals to a timely and code-compliant conclusion.
- Meet with architects, engineers, contractors, various agencies, and community stakeholders to advise on fire prevention issues affecting development and construction activities; provide technical expertise concerning fire protection infrastructure planning.
- Provide Project Managers and other staff guidance on the design and placement of fire and life safety equipment. Ensure code effective design development and advocate good code compliance practices to the project manager.
- Properly investigate all fire incidents on UT Dallas property, write investigative reports as to the origin & cause of fire incidents, and coordinate all fire incident investigations with UT Dallas Police, UT System Risk Management, and the Texas State Fire Marshal's Office. Train all Safety Team personnel in fire incident response.
- Work with the Fire & Life Safety Department personnel to plan, organize, and conduct fire & life safety public education. Work with other stakeholders of the UT Dallas community to incorporate them into public education.
- Coordinate community engagement activities.
- Must have good organizational and time management skills with the ability to set priorities to coordinate assignments with fluctuation and time-sensitive deadlines; proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
- Participate in a revolving duty officer rotation
