The Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan is seeking an experienced and dynamic Division Chief of Acute Care Surgery to lead and advance our Acute Care Surgery Division. Clinically, the Division manages trauma and burn patients, and also provides comprehensive emergency general surgery and critical care services.  The ideal candidate will possess a strong clinical background, demonstrated leadership in resource management, and a proven track record in mentorship, education, and academic achievement. Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Acute Care Surgery Division in providing high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance clinical services, education, and research initiatives.
  • Mentor and support junior and new faculty, fostering a culture of professional growth and development.
  • Oversee resource management and operational efficiency to optimize patient care.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to identify and achieve the Division's shared vision and goals.
  • Engage in clinical practice, academic activities, and research to maintain and enhance the Division's reputation for excellence.

Qualifications:

  • Required:
    • Board certification in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.
    • Established expertise in Acute Care Surgery with a distinguished record of academic excellence in research.
    • Experience in leadership roles, particularly in resource management, mentorship, and education.
    • Strong clinical focus with demonstrated clinical excellence.
  • Preferred Skills:
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Demonstrated humility and professionalism
    • Proven mentorship skills, especially for junior and new faculty members.
    • Persistence and perseverance in addressing operational issues to optimize patient care.

The division's 12 faculty members provide care to nearly 5,000 patients and perform over 1,600 operations per year. They also direct the Surgical Intensive Care Unit as well as the Trauma-Burn Intensive Care Unit.  The Division has major academic resources with a combined research portfolio of over $30 million over the past five years.
