Lab Technician – LAB AST 2

 

Job Summary

The Lab assistant will work under the supervision of Associate Professor Troy Magney, and with the Plant Optics Lab. Under supervision, set up and establish experimental field plots and monitor field equipment, work with students and postdocs in the lab on a variety of field projects. The position will work closely with lab members to achieve various projects goals for ongoing projects in the lab. This will involve travel to field sites, collection and processing of field data, as well as managing the lab. The Lab Technician will be a critical lab member, engaging in scientific discussions on various projects, including field set-up and analysis.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • This position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. Driver's license required to operate campus vehicles.

 

  • College level course work in Environmental Science, Physics, Plant Science, or a related field.

 

 

  • Minimum of 1 year of hands-on experience working in a laboratory environment, ideally similar to the Plant Optics Lab. Previous experience collecting field data and working with field-based instrumentation, such as field spectroscopy, gas-exchange, basic plant physiology functional data, chlorophyll fluorescence. Data management and processing.

 

  • Experience operating vehicles on rough roads, demonstrating proficiency in driving off-road vehicles and navigating difficult terrain safely. Proven experience with camping and hiking in remote locations. Familiarity with outdoor survival skills and the ability to work effectively in challenging field conditions.

 

 

  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining field-based instrumentation, including but not limited to: Field spectroscopy equipment, Gas-exchange systems for measuring gas fluxes, instruments for collecting basic plant physiology functional data, such as instruments for measuring leaf area, stomatal conductance, or photosynthesis rates. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurement devices for assessing photosynthetic efficiency and plant stress.

 

  • Strong skills in data management and processing, including: Organizing and storing field data in a structured manner. Cleaning and preprocessing raw data for analysis. Proficiency in relevant software tools for data analysis and visualization, such as R, Python, MATLAB, or specialized software packages.

 

 

  • Exceptional attention to detail in all aspects of work, including data collection, analysis, equipment maintenance, and safety protocols. Strong organizational abilities, including effective time management, prioritization, and the ability to maintain orderly records and documentation.

 

  • Willingness to adapt to varying research projects and tasks as needed, demonstrating flexibility and a positive attitude towards learning new techniques and methodologies. Including demonstrated success in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, showcasing strong interpersonal and communication skills. This includes collaborating effectively within multicultural teams and engaging with diverse communities.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Insert Here Experience with geospatial analysis or other quantitative tasks.

 

  • Experience working with data on plant physiology. Knowing how to interpret plant physiology data.

 

  • Highly collaborative, and flexible, comfortable in field settings.

 

  • Effective communication with both scientific collaborators and public stakeholders.

 

  • Skilled navigating on- and off-trail using topographic maps, GPS.

 

  • Excellent organizations skills for planning, data management, and equipment management.

 

  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude in physically harsh and/or demanding conditions
