Departmental Overview

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs.  These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).  We are currently seeking a Building Maintenance Worker.

Responsibilities

The Facilities unit provides daily maintenance and operational support to coaches, staff, and participants in athletic programming.  Additionally, the Facilities unit maintains a variety of sports venues and spectator facilities.  The IA Facilities unit is seeking a Building Maintenance Worker (BMW) to perform maintenance and related functions in support of Athletic Department programs and activities.  

Under supervisor, the BMW position scope includes traditional maintenance and repairs to facilities and equipment as well as preventive maintenance at Athletic Department buildings and sports venues.  The BMW also provides significant support for student-athletes, coaches, and spectators through a variety of general tasks related to home events, athletic equipment, and fan amenities.

  • Building Management – Works with all components of assigned buildings and its operation, maintenance and repair. Perform routine checks of all components of the building, identifying those that require repair. Serves as the main point of contact for any and all issues with assigned building from stakeholders, occupants and other campus entities.
  • Serves as the facility support staff member for any sporting and special events held in the assigned buildings. Works closely with Athletics event staff on setups and the operation of sporting events and ensues technical and equipment portions of event are running appropriately.
  • As requested, perform quality control checks across various facilities identifying areas of improvements, new projects and issues that will be addressed by facility staff.

Required Qualifications
  • Building maintenance experience including methods, processes, materials used in performing building maintenance work. 
  • Basic understanding of maintenance practices, methods, procedures, roles, equipment, tools, materials, sources for obtaining specialized materials and services, time required to perform work, and proper sequencing of the required steps in structuring and completing maintenance work and assigned projects. 
  • Ability to operate machines and equipment used for maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person, by telephone, radio, and in writing with customers, supervisors and co-workers.
  • Able to work safely at heights; able to gain access to work in small/tight areas and be able to gain access to work or maneuver around obstacles that requires stairs and ladders, able to safely maneuver supplies and objects up to 75 lbs; sets up and uses scaffolding and/or ladders to perform tasks above ground level.
  • Ability to gain knowledge of applicable NCAA and ACC rules and regulations.
  • Flexible work schedule to include weekend and evening work.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
     

Preferred Qualifications
  • Any combination of education, technical training, and work experience in construction or building maintenance.
  • Troubleshooting and repair knowledge, work experience repairing household appliances.
  • Experience working with sports programs.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. 

The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $22.48 (step 1) - $30.86 ( Step 17)

  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
  • This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Service Unit (SX) between the University of California and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). The current bargaining agreement manual can be found at:
