Congress provided USACE with $17B in supplemental funding through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This combined with a trend of record USACE annual funding appropriations and Emergency Supplemental Disaster Recovery Appropriations for USACE in 3 of the past 5 years totaling over $7B have the nation's waterways set up for a ten-year program of design and construction.
As an industry leader in USACE Engineering and Design support, Tetra Tech has placed contract capacity and been selected to lead the design of multiple ongoing top priority USACE projects, including rehabilitation of inland navigation lock and dam systems, design of new navigation locks, and coastal protection projects. These projects represent a once in a generation investment in our nation's waterways.
As a Structural Engineer in our Design Center, you will work closely with national industry leaders and local experts to support clients with structural design. This position offers multiple growth opportunities, in both technical design expertise and project management. Upcoming projects for our structural engineering group include:
New Lock Final Design: Tetra Tech will be designing a new 1200' lock to be part of the U.S. Inland Waterway Navigation System. Work will include designing lock walls, guide walls and gates. At a second new 1200' lock project, Tetra Tech will be developing design criteria, developing construction methodologies, and designing upstream and downstream guide walls.
Dam and Reservoir Design: Tetra Tech is performing the 30% design for a new reservoir and four new dams in Colorado. The structural design will include preliminary design for two concrete dams, spillways, stilling basins, outlet works, and inlet works.
Spillway Design: Our team will be designing a new spillway capable of passing both floods and downstream fish passage.
More About This Role:
- Perform structural design and analysis of civil works structures (flood walls, navigation locks, dam structures), waterfront structures, bridges and pump stations
- Produce calculations using engineering formulas for project design
- Perform quality control checks of calculations, drawings, and quantities.
- Research design options and document findings for senior engineers
- Solve problems using a combination of design standards and modified standard procedures or methods developed in prior assignments
- Read, interpret, and develop structural design plans
- Review and respond to shop drawings and RFIs during construction
- Provide information to senior engineers for incorporation into specifications
- Assign work and/or check design calculations and quantities from junior engineers
- Contact and coordinate with other departments to research appropriate course of action
You Will Bring These Qualifications:
- BS in civil/structural engineering required (master's degree preferred)
- 5+ years of relevant structural engineering experience
- Professional Engineer (PE) certification required
- Structural engineering: analysis and design of concrete structures, steel structures
- Marine experience: Design of marinas, breasting structures, dolphins, wharves, pier, and port facilities. Mooring and berthing analysis.
- Basic knowledge on foundation engineering
- Basic knowledge of structural codes and standards
- Basic knowledge on wind and wave loads.
- Experience developing structural drawings
- Experience with structural computer-based design tools (such as SAP2000, SAFE, LPILE GROUP)
- Working knowledge of BIM, and/or CAD software platforms (such as Civil3D, AutoCAD, Revit, Bentley OpenBuildings, MicroStation)
- Working knowledge of 3D FEA structural analysis computer design tools (such as ANSYS)
- Demonstrated educational and relevant work experience showing strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills

The salary range or hourly wage for this position is approximately $85,000 to $135,000 depending on education, qualifications, experience and work location.
