We are seeking a dedicated Family Medicine physician to join either faculty at our Akron Family Medicine Residency Program or Barberton Family Residency Program. Both program details will be listed below. Open to new graduates and experienced providers. The selected candidate will become a member of the Summa Health Medical Group, a multi-specialty group practice of 400+ physicians.

Summa is one of the largest integrated Healthcare Delivery Systems in the state. With 2 hospitals, over 20 health centers, an employed multi-specialty physician provider organization, an Accountable Care Organization, and a health insurance company, Summa Health provides access to care throughout the entire region of Northeast Ohio.

 As a Core Family Medicine Faculty member, you will play a vital role in the education and training of our residents. Your clinical expertise and passion for family medicine will help shape the future of healthcare professionals. While previous teaching experience is desirable, it is not required. We welcome candidates with a strong clinical background who are enthusiastic about teaching and mentoring residents.

Akron Family Medicine Core Faculty

The Family Medicine Residency Program

The Akron Family Medicine Residency Training Program Currently the program has 24 resident positions (8-8-8), is accredited by the ACGME with Osteopathic Recognition, and is PCMH (NCQA) certified residency practice.  We practice full spectrum Family Medicine with continuity OB as well as a dedicated Inpatient Family Medicine hospital service. The Family Medicine Center is committed to the service of our community through a model of multidisciplinary care that includes medication assisted therapy, integrated Behavioral Health, Clinical Pharmacists on site, embedded Social Services and offers extended services via a fresh Food Pantry as well as a Medical-Legal partnership.

Options for Scheduling: these options below can be modified to fit your professional goals.

Schedule Option A – “Business Hours Structure”

  • Monday through Friday business hours
  • Hospital Service call is 7 days every six weeks rounding on service.
  • Inpatient work involves coverage of our general medical admissions and newborns, with an average census of 10-15.
  • Night call is shared. If FM OB, separate coverage, balanced with our other FM OB faculty (4 currently)

Schedule Option B – “Hospitalist Structure”

  • 26 weeks of 7 on / 7 off inpatient coverage (may discuss a different arrangement)
  • 40 days of administrative, teaching and staffing services

Barberton Family Medicine Core Faculty  

The Barberton Family Medicine Residency Training Program at Summa Health- Barberton Campus has trained nearly 200 family physicians. Barberton Hospital was founded in 1981 and became a part of Summa Health in 2007. Currently the program has 18 resident positions (6-6-6) and is the only residency based at Barberton Hospital. However, residents have full access to all of Summa Health's educational resources. Core faculty are responsible for precepting the residents' care in both inpatient and outpatient settings, developing and presenting formal lectures, and providing leadership in promoting high-quality care and resident scholarship.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree
  • Board Certified / Board Eligible in Family Medicine
  • Unrestricted Ohio Licensure or willingness to obtain
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Commitment of quality care in a patient centered, team-based environment
