Overview
The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking a Civil Engineer to join our Structures & Hydraulics Section. This team is responsible for developing and designing plans, specifications, and estimates for transportation infrastructure projects across the state, including bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and more. We are currently hiring for both Structural and Hydraulic design roles. This position is based at Barre City Place in Barre, Vermont.
As part of the Hydraulic Design team, you will perform and review hydraulic analyses for bridges and culverts using advanced modeling tools. You will simulate flow conditions under various storm events, evaluate scour and erosion risks, and design protective measures to safeguard Vermont's infrastructure. You'll work closely with architects, civil and environmental engineers, and transportation planners to ensure hydraulic considerations are fully integrated into project designs.
In this role, you will also prepare technical reports, drawings, specifications, and other documentation related to bridge design, analysis, and construction.
To succeed in this position, candidates should demonstrate the following:
- Working knowledge of two- and one-dimensional bridge hydraulic modeling concepts and tools, such as SMS/SHR-2D, HEC-RAS, and HY8
- Familiarity with GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS
- Experience with hydrologic modeling and calculations
- Knowledge of scour evaluation and countermeasure design, including use of HEC-18 and HEC-23
- Understanding of fluvial geomorphology and aquatic organism passage (AOP)
- Ability to collaborate effectively and carry out engineering assignments from start to finish with minimal supervision

Duties are generally performed in both office and field settings for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND four (4) years of engineering experience.
OR
Associates degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND six (6) years of engineering experience INCLUDING licensure as an Engineer Intern.
