The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets is seeking a motivated veterinarian to join our team of passionate professionals as the Vermont Assistant State Veterinarian and Animal Health Section Chief. The Assistant State Veterinarian guides an experienced technical and administrative staff and collaborates with other program managers to fulfill the goals of the Animal Health section: maintain the ability of Vermont's livestock, poultry, and livestock products to be sold locally, nationally and internationally and engage with producers, processors and consumers to ensure livestock and poultry health and compliance with best practices, laws and regulations.
This position allows the successful applicant to engage in a rewarding mix of regulation, education and technical assistance while maintaining a desirable work-life balance. The Assistant State Veterinarian must advise the Secretary of Agriculture and the Vermont Legislature and work closely with numerous state, federal and non-governmental agencies, departments and organizations. Work is primarily performed in an office setting, but field-based work is required with instate travel necessary. Out of state travel may be required as a representative of the Agency for attendance at meetings or training opportunities. Field settings may include agricultural fairs and competitive or educational events, industry meetings, livestock and poultry farms, and facilities or businesses regulated by the Agency. There is some risk of exposure to zoonotic diseases. Physical stress may be involved in handling livestock and equipment, and emotional stress may be precipitated by taking regulatory actions such as issuing regulatory notices or imposing quarantines. Private means of transportation is required. Evening and weekend work may be necessary.
Minimum QualificationsGraduation from an accredited school of veterinary medicine with the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD).
Possession of, or eligibility for, licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Vermont is required.
Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience in the practice of food animal veterinary medicine, the interpretation or enforcement of state and federal regulations, or to those candidates with personnel supervisory experience.
