Overview

This position involves advanced professional archaeological work with the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), focusing on assessing potential impacts of transportation projects on archaeological resources. The Senior Archaeologist takes on full responsibility for the archaeological review of all VTrans projects within an assigned region, providing expert evaluations of proposed project impacts on Native American and historic archaeological sites.

 

Acting independently under the general oversight of the Environmental Resources Coordinator, this role requires a high level of professional judgment, technical expertise, and interaction with personnel across state and federal agencies. The position requires independent decision-making in alignment with the standards set by the National Historic Preservation Act, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act, and the Vermont Historic Preservation Act. This work supports VTrans' commitment to developing projects responsibly while preserving Vermont's cultural heritage.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in both office and field settings, and private means of transportation may be required. Work outside of the normal work schedule and out of the state may be required. Some resources may be located in remote areas that are difficult to access. Outdoor work is performed throughout the year, leading to exposure to all types of weather. Adversarial situations may be encountered in the normal course of duties. Work involves considerable mental demands including the concurrent review of many diverse projects. Work also involves considerable stress stemming from a heavy workload performed under tight time constraints, often working with applicants who do not understand- and may be unsympathetic to the various, mandatory review processes.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree or higher in archaeology, anthropology, or related field AND five (5) or more years of experience in archaeology, anthropology, or historic preservation.
OR
Master's degree or higher in archaeology, anthropology, or related field AND two (2) or more years of experience as a VTrans Archaeologist II.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with implementing Programmatic Agreements that delegate authority of cultural resource management laws and regulations.
Considerable knowledge in Section 106 review and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act including working with the federal guidelines for archaeological documentation.
Familiarity with the Programmatic Agreement among the Federal Highway Administration, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the Vermont State Historic Preservation Officer, and the Vermont Agency of Transportation Regarding Implementation of the Federal-Aid Highway Program (2000), Revised (2016).
Archaeological experience within the northeast region of the United States.
Familiarity with the VT SHPO Guidelines for Conducting Archaeological Studies within Vermont as amended in 2016.
