Description

The Orthopaedic Trauma Physician Assistant (PA) is a clinical coordinator who possesses advanced knowledge and skills to complement the care provided by the orthopaedic trauma physicians. The PA scope of practice will include the performance of delegated patient care tasks under the orthopaedic trauma physician's supervision. The PA is responsible for the care of the orthopaedic trauma patient across the continuum of orthopaedic care. The focus of the PA is on evaluation and management of orthopaedic conditions from injury to patient recovery. The PA functions in an advanced practice provider role as a consultant, facilitator, educator, change agent, program designer, outcome manager, and resource person to the orthopaedic trauma patient population and caregivers. Advanced clinical practice distinguishes the PA position, supported by knowledge and competence in the areas of research, leadership, consultation, education and professional growth. This position assumes a leadership role in strengthening collaborative relationships with healthcare leaders, physicians, nurses and patients in various settings and various shifts, to improve patient/family outcomes along the care continuum.

Essential Functions:
  • Performs expert direct patient care, including surgical assistance as required, in the clinical setting of the Orthopaedic Trauma Program while providing patient care coordination across the continuum.
    • Must be able to assist in the operating room with surgical cases:
  • Makes rounds on the Orthopaedic Trauma patient population, providing evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients requiring a wide scope of orthopaedic interventions, invasive and non-invasive treatments, and on-going injury management.
  • Must be able to assist with inpatient care:
    • Assists in emergency room coverage:
      • Participate in the Call Coverage Panel, evaluating and treating ER/Trauma orthopaedic patients
      • Assess orthopedic injuries and establish a care plan
      • Closed reduction of fractures and dislocations
      • Laceration and wound-care.
  • Assesses the patient education program and monitors the educational level of patients to maximize learning opportunities and improvements. Utilizes data to monitor the quality of care delivered within the scope of the Orthopaedic Trauma Program.
  • Actively participates on the appropriate committees for the Orthopaedic Trauma Program. Gathers, analyzes, and synthesizes data to develop "best practices", and provides benchmarks/goals for patient care working cooperatively with the Orthopaedic Trauma Director.
  • Assist in Clinical Research projects and outcome studies to assess and improve quality of care.

Schedule:

  • Days, nights, weekends and holidays with rotating shifts
  • 8 and 10 hour shifts
  • Rotating shifts at different hospitals and clinics in LA and Orange County areas

Minimum Position Qualifications:

  • Education:

Graduate of an approved Physician Assistant training program

Current with respect to continuing education requirements

  • Experience:

Completed a preceptorship (minimum of three months) in Orthopaedic Surgery. Non-orthopaedic rotations will be considered if judged to be an equivalent to surgical experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • License / Certification:

Current California Physician Assistant license and licensed by the Medical Board of California

BLS certification, DEA

  • Credentialing:

Credentialed by the medical staff and privileges granted.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

  • Previous Physician Assistant experience in an Orthopaedic surgery setting. However, other surgical experience will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

Compensation:

  • Annual compensation is commensurate with experience and skill set. Full Time Compensation Range $135,000 - $175,000
