The Basics:

Location: Midvale, UT; Philadelphia, PA; Portland/Auburn, ME

Days/Hours: Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

 

Responsible for implementing and executing the Safety, Health and Environmental (SH&E) plan and providing strategic direction for SH&E in the Rail and Terminals, North Unit.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Lead a team of SH&E professionals in Rail and Terminals, supporting individual operations as needed.
  • Collaborate with operations managers to implement Savage's S7 System for safety.
  • Develop and deliver training on procedures and regulations.
  • Partner with Business Unit Leaders to prevent injuries and losses.
  • Establish proactive SH&E processes for incident prevention and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Assist onsite Safety Specialists in enforcing safety rules and utilizing tools.
  • Collaborate with SH&E professionals for strategy alignment and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct training to ensure safe work practices for all team members.
  • Participate in SH&E councils and maintain a strong presence on the customer's contractor safety council.
  • Ensure compliance with EPA and OSHA regulations, completing necessary permits and reports.
  • Interface with customer SH&E contacts to implement their programs.
  • Lead post-incident investigations and develop sustainable corrective actions.
  • Monitor safety statistics and implement corrective actions to achieve zero injuries.
  • Ensure proper reporting of incidents to all stakeholders.
  • Assist in the start-up of new business initiatives and lead customer safety audits.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring for SH&E Supervisors and Managers.
  • Track leading indicators to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.

Requirements to Be Successful in This Position:

  • In-depth knowledge in the transportation and storage of hazardous chemicals; with emphasis on rail and transloading.
  • Basic understanding of DOT and FRA rules and requirements.
  • Proven ability to analyze situations and data to make sound decisions.
  • Experience delivering training preferred
  • Computer skills (MS Office Suite)
  • Excellent communication skills: written and spoken; excellent organizational skills & multi-tasking
  • Impeccable integrity
  • Detail-oriented and self-starter, with the ability to prioritize tasks
  • Sets the standard for safety, professionalism, and performance

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Safety or related field
  • 8+ years' experience in a safety leadership role
  • 8+ years' experience working in an industrial setting
  • Hold a safety certification recognized by an accredited organization (CSP, SMS, CHMM, OHST, or CET).
  • Transloading/HAZMAT DOT/Industrial Rail experience preferred

  • 50% Travel / 50% Office (Cubicle unless Remote)

  • Ability to be exposed to the outdoor elements
  • Physically fit to train team members and perform job tasks, including:
    • Safely climbing on/off railcars and locomotives
    • Operating railcar hand brakes and switches
    • Walking long distances and standing on uneven surfaces
    • Bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing elevated surfaces
    • Lifting up to 50 lbs consistently
    • Using basic hand tools
