The Microsoft System Administrator ‐ SME position will provide Windows engineering support administering and managing servers and systems, cloud infrastructure, file and print environments and specializing in Microsoft Windows server operating systems for DOT at the DR data center at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi and will be responsible for building, patching, and troubleshooting Windows servers in support of current and future DOT systems and applications. This candidate will be working with a team of server engineers to troubleshoot issues for multiple systems in multiple datacenter locations.  The Senior Windows Engineer will provide support, implementation, and design services for Windows-based systems across the enterprise.  The candidate will be responsible for resolving and completing assigned tasks and change requests and will act as an escalation for support issues. The candidate will also be responsible for applying new solutions through research and collaboration with team members and will be advising on course of actions for new application initiatives.

Job Duties:

  • This position requires a minimum 2x/week onsite.
  • Once every 2-3 months support server infrastructure in a 24x7 on-call escalation capacity as part of a team rotation.
  • Assist with monthly Server Patching once a month during Saturday maintenance window.
  • Provide administrative smart hands support within the Stennis datacenter.
  • Administer systems infrastructure both on-premises and in the cloud.
  • Manage and lead systems and infrastructure projects.
  • Support IT service consolidation projects.
  • Manage and troubleshoot virtual machines utilizing VMware ESXi and Hyper V.
  • Perform commissioning, management, troubleshooting, and decommissioning of physical, virtual, and cloud servers including AWS and Azure servers.
  • Manage Windows OS-based computer devices through Active Directory, Group Policy Objects, registry and files system security as needed.
  • Follow existing incident, problem, release, change management processes.
  • Provide engineering recommendations for hardware refreshes of servers and storage.
  • Provide high level technical support for Tier-3 issue escalations/tickets.
  • Help manage warranty renewals and support contract renewals.
  • Perform engineering studies as requested for OST Datacenter Operations.
  • Plan upgrades and enhancements to server infrastructure at DOT DR data center.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have a minimum of 12 years of experience administrating and managing servers and systems, cloud infrastructure, file and print environments, specializing in Windows operating systems.
  • Must have experience leading technical team supporting system operations.  Must have extensive knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory and SQL Server
  • Must possess a Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) - Server Infrastructure or equivalent.

  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of Windows OS to include W2K12R2, W2K16, W2K19, and, ideally, W2K22.  
  • Experience with installing hardware drivers, firmware, bios, and other hardware upgrades for Dell servers.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of common ports and protocols used by Windows servers and clients.
  • Strong experience troubleshooting IIS and RemoteApp.
  • Strong knowledge and expertise in Hyper-V and VMware.
  • Strong experience leading troubleshooting calls spanning across multiple teams and using multi-discipline approach.
  • Experience remediating server security vulnerabilities and assessment findings.
  • Expert knowledge and troubleshooting skills to resolve failed update installation in Windows OS and VMware.
  • Expert at managing Virtual Hosts, Virtual Servers, and using the VMware suite of applications and tools.
  • Expertise with PowerShell and command-line scripting.
  • Experience performing dual-stack and IPv6-only testing of Windows Servers and other Windows-based systems.
  • Experience performing dual-stack implementation of IPv4 and IPv6, ideally with pure IPv6 as well.
  • Experience managing environments of 2000+ servers across multiple field site locations.
  • Knowledge of AD Group policy and applying security posture via GPO's.
  • Experience with performing root cause analysis, risk identification, and risk mitigation
  • Strong customer engagement and communication skills, and ability to quickly assess issues and escalate when necessary.
  • Ability to collaborate and perform in team environment.
  • Must be a self-started with strong problem solving and communication skills.

Preferred

  • Network Engineering experience and strong understanding of fundamental concepts including ports, protocols, firewalls, reverse proxy, VLANs, and network architectures.
  • Storage experience, ideally with Dell EMC Unity Storage Array- Commvault
  • Database Administration (DBA) experience with SQL expertise
  • Linux experience and expertise patching and troubleshooting Linux Servers
  • VMware Certification(s)
  • AWS/ Azure Cloud Certification(s)
  • Additional Microsoft and/or Azure Certification(s)
  • Cisco Certifications including CCNA or CCNP
  • CompTIA Certifications including Network+, Security+ CE, etc.

Target salary range: $120,001 - $160,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
