SAIC has a Full-Time Position opening for a Mechanical Engineer to work in support of the NCCIPSv2 Contract. The National Center for Critical Information Processing and Storage (NCCIPS) is a federal shared services facility, managed by the NASA Shared Services Center (NSSC). NCCIPS provides facilities support to meet the requirements of multiple federal agency data centers and manages those relationships via Interagency Agreements. NCCIPS is a 200,000 sq. ft. secure facility situated on a 64-acre campus within NASA Stennis Space Center in southern Mississippi. This position is an on-site position located at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi. 

The Facility Mechanical Engineer will support the critical operations of a data center facility. This position is vital to ensuring the reliability and performance of mechanical systems that support 24x7 operations in a mission-critical environment. The ideal candidate will have expertise in HVAC systems, chilled water distribution, and environmental control systems, as well as experience working in data center or similar mission-critical environments.

This position will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical engineers, facilities staff, and operations managers, to maintain optimal system performance, implement upgrades, and troubleshoot issues. This role also requires participation in planning, designing, and implementing mechanical infrastructure improvements.

Job Description:

  • Responsible for the management of the mechanical infrastructure requirements within the NCCIPS Facility.
  • Research, specify, evaluate and document mechanical engineering drawings, plans, and other related documents and materials.
  • Develop and review plans to manage cooling capacity, ensuring compliance with industry best practices and data center operational standards.
  • Provide oversight for all construction activity and installations, in coordination with internal and external construction resources, to ensure system design, installation and testing adhere to operational standards. Witness testing of all equipment during commissioning and validate sequence of operations and receipt of all operational documentation.
  • Responsible for the review of proposed client system installations and changes, and the impact of those systems on the mechanical and environmental infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess and implement solutions for optimizing mechanical systems to support growing data center demands.
  • Monitor actual versus design loads and recommend improvements for better utilization of infrastructure.
  • Provide support for all aspects of facilities and data center management including the operation, maintenance and repair of all mission critical equipment and systems supporting a 24x7 data center operation to achieve 100% compliance with all customer SLAs.
  • Coordination and communication with the Project Management Office is required to ensure that the projects costs are estimated accurately as well as completed on-schedule per the customer requirements.
  • Develop, implement and audit local standard operating procedures, sequence of operations and maintenance standards to be in compliance with NASA standards and industry best practices.
  • Advise Facility Managers on budgeting and long-range planning for facility operations and maintenance.
  • Maintain compliance with local health & safety (i.e. OSHA) and environmental standards Analyze and evaluate the performance of data center cooling infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with vendors to conduct regular inspections, performance testing, and preventative maintenance of cooling systems to ensure operational efficiency and mitigate risks.

Work Environment:

  • Work is to be performed on-site at the location listed, with the potential of teleworking up to 1-day per week.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Bachelors and six (6) years or more of related experience; Masters and four (4) years or more experience; PhD and 0 years related experience.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • 5+ years experience in mechanical engineering with focus on HVAC systems, chilled water distribution, and environmental controls.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Prior experience should include similar duties and responsibilities that are specified in the job description.
  • Able to interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative reasoning skills, with demonstrated ability to determine event root causes, performance shortfalls and required corrective actions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook and familiarity with Microsoft Project, Visio or AutoCad.
  • Must be able to oversee field installations, develop strategic goals and policy.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, presentation, and communication (both oral and written) skills.
  • Teamwork skills are a must when working on large projects with co- workers and client representatives.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
  • Experience working within a change control environment. 

Desired Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Desired Certifications:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred but not required.
  • Certifications such as LEED AP, ASHRAE Certified Professional, or similar are a plus.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with building automation systems (BAS) and Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems for monitoring and controlling electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Prior experience in data center or mission-critical facilities.
  • Advanced trouble-shooting skills.
  • Familiarity with power metering/power monitoring systems
  • Design and analysis software, such as AutoCAD, Revit

Clearance:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a DOD Interim Secret clearance prior to employment.  Continued employment is contingent that the employee obtains and maintains a full Secret clearance within a reasonable amount of time.
