Organization Overview

Information Technology (IT) aims to provide information resources and services to accelerate and support scientific research and administrative operations at The Rockefeller University. Our department is responsible for the university's software environment , decision support, data analytics, cyberinfrastructure (including cloud infrastructure and services), and cybersecurity programs. DevOps and Agile practices have been adopted and are in use by the department, representing a major cultural transition. The Information Technology Department works within the Office of the CIO, which oversees additional departments, including the university's Data Science Platform, High-Performance Computing Resource Center, Bioinformatics Resource Center, and Library.
Overview

We seek a Senior System Administrator to partner with cross-functional technical teams and maintain our Red Hat Linux environment, HAProxy load balancers, and NetVault enterprise backups. The Senior System Administrator operates secure computing platforms and enterprise applications in the University's network.

 

Reporting to the Director of Application Development and Support, the ideal candidate must prioritize tasks, troubleshoot, and solve issues quickly. They must possess excellent communication, interpersonal, decision-making, time management, and organizational skills. They will be required to absorb new technologies and remain informed on current technologies supporting the University's world-class scientific research laboratories.

 

Providing infrastructure support for multiple developed systems and applications of medium to high complexity, ensuring control, integrity, and accessibility, the incumbent must comprehensively understand the Red Hat Linux OS and tools and secure Red Hat Linux-based infrastructures. Knowledge and experience with Oracle e-Business Suite and Oracle databases running under Red Hat Linux are desired. DevOps principles and best practices must be followed (infrastructure as code, automation throughout the lifecycle, etc.).


Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Utilize a thorough understanding of available technology, tools, best practices to design, manage, maintain, upgrade and monitor University computing systems; write and maintain technical documentation
  • Install, configure, deploy, patch, maintain, secure, monitor, and troubleshoot Red Hat Linux servers (RHEL8 or RHEL9); manage Red Hat Satellite licenses; sync and add repositories; perform upgrades to the Red Hat Satellite server
  • Write and maintain Ansible playbooks in git repositories to automate deployment of configurations and updates to Red Hat Linux servers; write and maintain shell scripts to automate and perform system administration tasks
  • Manage, maintain, and upgrade the HAProxy Enterprise; have expertise with the HAProxy solution to configure, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot VSs for websites and applications
  • Manage, maintain, and upgrade the NetVault backup system/server; have expertise with the NetVault solution plus the Oracle RMAN plug-in to ensure data is reliably backed up, restored, and monitored
  • Setup entries in Checkmk for monitoring servers, resources, and services
  • Obtain and install/integrate SSL certificates to ensure secure access and credentials; manage SSH/GPG keys, including generating new key pairs, distributing public keys to relevant systems, and revoking keys. Requires strong security awareness and best practices for key management
  • Perform capacity planning for new and replacement servers (CPU, space, RAM); other related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

A bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is required. Master's degree is preferred.

Must possess at least eight (8) years of hands-on related experience.

Candidate must be certified as a Red Hat Linux Engineer (RHEL8 or RHEL9): https://www.fieldengineer.com/skills/red-hat-certified-engineer 

 

Must possess a proven working knowledge and in-depth understanding of the following systems:

  • Red Hat Satellite version 6.14 or higher
  • Ansible version 2.14 or higher
  • Git version 3.9 or higher
  • Strong shell scripting skills (Bash, csh, sh, etc.)
  • SSL Certificates (both Let's Encrypt and Sectigo or equivalent)
  • SSH keys and GPG keys
  • Monitoring software (Checkmk or equivalent)
  • NetVault version 3.1.3 or higher with Oracle RMAN plug-in
  • HAProxy Enterprise version 2.8 or higher, including HAProxy Fusion

Excellent analytical ability, strong judgment and management skills, and the ability to work effectively and independently with clients, vendors, IT management, and staff. 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with other versions of UNIX/Linux such as Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, etc...
Experience with Oracle e-Business Suite, Oracle databases, MySQL databases, and other UNIX services such as Apache, PHP, etc.
Experience working in a higher education or research environment preferred.

Compensation Range: Min

USD $135,000.00/Yr.
Compensation Range: Max

USD $150,000.00/Yr.
