Description

Organization Overview

Cells are constantly subjected to mechanical forces that originate either externally from the environment or internally from cellular machinery. Headed by Dr. Gregory M. Alushin, the Laboratory of Structural Biophysics and Mechanobiology studies how cells use changes in the conformation of actin filaments within their internal skeletons to sense and respond to those forces. Over the long term, the lab seeks to understand how changes to actin are linked to alterations in gene expression in development and disease.
Overview

The Alushin lab uses a combination of cell biology, biophysics, and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structural biology to decipher how cells perceive mechanical forces through the cytoskeleton. We seek a Research Assistant who is interested in pursuing fulltime research aligned with ongoing projects in the lab for 2 years prior to enrolling in a PhD/MD-PhD program. Responsibilities will include culturing and performing proteomics/fluorescence microscopy assays with mammalian cells, performing protein purification and biochemical assays, and preparing and imaging samples with cryo-EM. Opportunities are also available for performing computational analysis of cryo-EM data. The Research Assistant is alsoexpected to assist with coordinating ordering of laboratory supplies, general lab organization and administration, and preparation of common reagent stocks for lab members.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing independent and collaborative laboratory research
  • Coordinating lab ordering, organization and related administrative tasks
  • Preparing common reagents, including actin protein, for use by lab members
  • Performing related duties and responsbilities as assigned/requested

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in biological, physical, or computational sciences is required. Prior undergraduate research experience in the biological, physical, or computational sciences is preferred but not essential.
