Organization Overview
The Rockefeller University Precision Instrumentation Technologies (PIT) Resource Center enables high-end scientific instrument design and fabrication for the diverse research applications of the University's 70 Laboratories. Through interactive engagement with Rockefeller scientists,the PIT provides end-to-end service from conceptualization to application of scientific instrumentation. The PIT is staffed by a team with complementary expertise in optical design,mechanical design and fabrication,electronics design,and precision fabrication.
Overview
We are looking for a Instrumentation Engineer to join our team, interfacing effectively with PIT staff and engaging directly with research personnel. The candidate should have enthusiasm for and a keen interest in biomedical research and engineering, in particular in the areas of neuroscience, biophysics, biology, physics/optics, bioengineering, and/or electrical engineering. The candidate should be excited to work as an integral member of a small and close-knit team, and willing to take on a broad range of tasks, as needed.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
- Supporting Rockefeller laboratories by realizing instrument solutions to address specific scientific needs
- Handle day-to-day operations and interactions with walk-in clients
- Overseeing and training of users of the makerspace rapid prototyping equipment and related interface software
- Operating 5-axis Hermle CNC-milling machine
- Serving as lead on 3D printers and 3D printing technology
- Serving as lead on laser cutter
- Providing system-level integration of different modules, including mechanical, electronic, and software components
- Engaging with research laboratories to identify and refine instrument designs
- Efficiently leveraging available local and external fabrication resources as needed
- Coordinating and collaborating with other PIT staff to maximize synergy and use of these and other University facilities
- Designing, fabricating, assembling, testing, and documenting developed instrument solutions before their transition to the research laboratories
- Interactively and iteratively troubleshooting designed instruments and implementing required adjustments
- Maintaining and servicing PIT equipment, directly and/or in coordination with outside service personnel
- Investigating new technologies for enhanced fabrication methods
- Performing other duties related to position and/or as requested by the Director
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a similar field; advanced degree highly desired; at least three (3) years of experience in increasingly responsible roles within a research prototyping shop or academic makerspace
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a fabrication workshop
- A minimum of three (3) years using engineering software and fabrication instruments such as Openmind Hypermill CAD/CAM, CNC machining, manual machining, and rapid prototyping
- Prior experience working with 3D mechanical design software, such as Autodesk Inventor or related software
- Previous experience with 3D printing technologies and laser cutters
- Prior experience working with a project management system
- Prior experience working with clients while providing hands-on instruction for machinery and software
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills with a high-level competence with Microsoft Office, Windows, and general PC skills
- Able to gain competency in PIT-specific support software
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working in the biomedical field, interacting with researchers and students.
- Experience working in a laboratory environment
- Competency with Hermle CNC mills and Heidenhain control software
- Knowledge of common scientific programming languages such as MATLAB, Mathematica, or Python
- Technical proficiency with PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator, or Photoshop is highly desired
- Knowledge of project workflow tracking software such as ProworkFlow

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on various factors, including but not limited to organizational budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The hiring range provided represents The Rockefeller University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
