The Rockefeller University Press publishes three biomedical research journals: The Journal of Cell Biology,The Journal of Experimental Medicine,and The Journal of General Physiology. We are committed to identifying and publishing the highest quality research. All editorial decisions are made in conjunction with active academic scientists,and peer-review operations and pre-press production functions are carried out at the RUP offices.
Overview
The Executive Editor leads a team of professional staff Scientific Editors working in concert with the journal's team of Academic Editors to publish high-quality science and ensure the continuing success of long established, preeminent journal in the biomedical sciences.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Director of the Rockefeller University Press (RUP), the Executive Editor is responsible for the administration of JCB/JEM maintaining a fair peer review process, selection of all content published in JCB/JEM, writing for, commissioning for, and promoting the journal, and ensuring JCB's/JEM's continuing development through attendance at meetings and institutional visits. The Executive Editor is responsible for tracking and reporting on journal performance, developing and implementing a strategic plan for the journal, and serves as the journal's main representative to the scientific community. As a member of the RUP leadership team, the Executive Editor contributes to the advancement of RUP.
Tasks include:
- Manage day to day operations of the journal, including oversight of editorial decisions, providing guidance to Scientific Editors, and ensuring editorial standards are met across the team
- Oversee regular monthly and annual reporting on journal metrics for Scientific Editors and Academic Editors, including decision rates and turnaround times
- Add new Editorial Board members, focusing on appropriate representation
- Issue RU editorial agreements to Academic Editors
- Increase journal recruitment efforts through site visits and meetings (4-5 each/editor), monitor editorial manuscript recruitment semi-annually via tracking spreadsheet to ensure meeting strategic goals
- Work with Scientific Editors to use front matter for recruitment, outreach and community engagement, assessing specific strategic goals for FM semi-annually and adjusting as needed.
- Perform annual competitive analysis to assess the competitive landscape and modify journal strategy as needed
- Produce annual report outlining key journal metrics and strategic initiatives and present at annual editorial board meeting
- Manage editorial budget – including travel, meeting sponsorship, board meetings and editorial support
- In conjunction with Communications and Marketing, develop strategies to highlight the journal content and policies and increase article usage
- Oversee updates to article style guide, journal instructions for authors, and eJP updates
- Meet with Executive Editor of other RUP journals to discuss strategies to ensure alignment across Press
- Participate in pan-editorial meetings to discuss editorial policies across journals
- Work collaboratively with Director of Publishing Technologies, production department, and preflight department to ensure fast and accurate production of accepted articles
- Work collaboratively with Executive Editor, Life Science Alliance to transfer manuscripts to that journal, where appropriate
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A Doctoral degree in a relevant disciple is required, postdoctoral experience is preferred. Experience as an author with a publication record, at least 4 years of editorial experience, and managerial and communication proficiency is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Postdoctoral experience is preferred. Ability to travel at least 4 - 5 times per year including international travel.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on various factors, including but not limited to organizational budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The hiring range provided represents The Rockefeller University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
