- An RNFA is a RN with additional certification to scrub in and actually first assist in a procedure. They can cut tissue and tie and suture and all those sorts of things that are outside a RN or ST's scope of practice. They are usually RNs that have worked in the OR as a circulator or a scrub RN so they're a little more versatile. Our hope is to get a few RNFAs to introduce the role to the surgeons and so we can utilize them most to scrub but also fill gaps in our nursing staff.
