Job Summary

The Patient Access Lead works under Supervision of the Patient Access Operations Manager performing functions of moderate to difficult complexity with high visibility and high risk from a compliance and regulatory standpoint. The Patient Access Lead assists Management with training, orienting and monitoring day to day performance of team members to ensure departmental policies and processes are being followed, responsible for daily cash handling procedures, assists with the development of team member schedules and registers patients. The Patient Access Lead is a Subject Matter Expert for the department.

Accountabilities:

(Seneca location is the Home Base, periodically will float to Grove and Easley locations)

  • Assists in recruitment and retention of qualified staff; participates in applicant screening, interviewing, and selection. 5%
  • Trains/orients and monitors progress/performance of assigned staff on a day-to-day basis.  Performs employee evaluations in collaboration with Manager and recommends personnel actions as appropriate. 5%
  • Develops and maintains work schedule within budgeted parameters.  Establishes priorities, assigns and monitors work, and audits work flow. 10%
  • Evaluates and monitors daily work processes/procedures for compliance with established quality and quantity standards.  Identifies and resolves problems and develops, recommends and implements process changes including performance coaching with employees to improve productivity and reduce costs. 25%
  • Coordinates activities necessary for implementation of required training programs. 5%
  • Monitors daily collections to identify trends and to develop and implement corrective action as needed. 5%
  • Coordinates admitting activities with other departments and with physician practices by anticipating and providing solutions to the needs of various populations.  Gives high priority to customer satisfaction by ensuring a smooth and efficient admission process, maximizing reimbursement and maintaining effective working relationships. 10%
  • Monitors Admissions activities and intervenes as necessary to alleviate difficult situations and handle customer inquiries or complaints. 5%
  • Interprets and implements hospital policies relating to admissions/discharge, credit & collections, disclosure of confidential information, and data and cash management. 10%
  • Maximizes collections and minimizes bad debt by reviewing all potential self-pay and sponsorship cases and taking appropriate action in compliance  hospital policy. 5%
  • Maximizes reimbursement by ensuring compliance with third party requirements, including precertification and insurance verifications.  Ensures compliance of reimbursement requirements and government, managed care and/or third party regulations and guidelines.  Communicates discrepancies to appropriate personnel or departments. 10%
  • Performs duties/responsibilities of Admissions Counselor as appropriate. 5%

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 4 years - Experience in hospital admissions, billing, or credit/collections.

In Lieu Of

In Lieu of the education and experience requirements noted above, an Associate's Degree plus 2 years experience - OR - 4 years in a service-related position such as customer service in a business/office setting, banking, or finance to include a minimum of 2 years in a lead capacity.  Preference is given to candidates with experience in hospital admissions, billing, or credit/collections.  Education Substitutes:  BS degree plus 1 year at the lead level or Associates degree with 3 years at the lead level will substitute for 4 years with 2 years at the lead level if coming from a service-related position such as customer service, banking, or finance

BS degree plus 1 year at the lead level will substitute for 4 years with 2 years at the lead level.

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

  • Associate Degree in a technical specialty program of 18 months minimum in length in Business Management - Preferred
