Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Orthopedic Attending Surgeon and/or Resident Physicians/Physician Extenders or nurse, assists the physician/resident and/or nurse with the care and treatment of orthopedic patients, including casting, bracing, splinting and traction application.Accountabilities
- Assists physician/nurse with casting, splinting and prefabricated bracing needs on the floor or in the OR. This includes but not limited to acquisition and assembling of supplies, clean up and ongoing monitoring.
- Sets up, applies and removes various traction on all age groups as ordered; provides ongoing monitoring.
- Ensures availability of appropriate and adequate supplies to include monitoring of cast cart/supplies and cast room. Performs regular maintenance as appropriate.
- Properly fits and applies crutches and other appropriate durable medical equipment and soft goods, i.e. SCDs, vest set and CPM at the direction of the Orthopedic Surgeon/Resident.
- Instructs patients in the the care and use of crutches, casts, traction and orthopedic appliances or any other item applied to patient.
- Conducts twice daily round throughout facility to check and adjust orthopedic appliances and traction.
- Assumes responsibility for remaining current with orthopedic trends, care and supplies.
Supervisory/Management Responsibility
This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.
Minimum Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent
- 2 years of experience in direct patient care, orthopedics preferred
Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses
Requires Orth Tech Certification by NBCOT (National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists) or ASOP (American Society of Orthopedic Professionals). (Lawson Code C072)
In Lieu Of The Above Minimum Requirements
Team members employed in this job prior to July 1, 2020 are grandfathered under prior educational and experience requirements. In addition, team members must be certification eligible and will have one year to obtain required certification.
