With more than 30 years of experience, our Critical Care physicians give quality care to critically ill or severely injured children of diverse populations residing in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and surrounding counties. Our critical care service spans to 54 beds between three hospitals, six intensive care units and two pediatric subacute facilities. We treat the full spectrum of pathology and disease, from the very common to the very rare. Patients with a wide range of disorders are hospitalized in the PICU, including those with:

  • Acute respiratory failure including the use of inhaled nitric oxide and high frequency oscillatory ventilation
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Severe traumatic brain injuries, continuous video EEG monitoring, intracranial pressure monitoring
  • Life-threatening disorders of the heart, lungs, and central nervous system
  • Chronic conditions such as respiratory illness, cancer, or muscular dystrophy, requiring pediatric intensive care
  • Post-surgical care and management, including cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, ENT surgery, general pediatric surgery and orthopedic surgery

Through participation in multi-center studies of children with life-threatening respiratory failure, Critical Care physicians provide the most technically advanced therapies, such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), high-frequency oscillation and the use of nitric oxide. Under our leadership, CHOC has had a successful ECMO program for more than 25 years, recently receiving the Platinum Award for excellence.

Our Critical Care physicians also are integral to the CHOC Cancer, Neuroscience, Cardiac and Orthopedic Institutes. Our services are complemented by the multidisciplinary care provided by other pediatric subspecialty physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, clinical dietitians, child psychologists and social workers at CHOC and CHOC at Mission. Additionally, our providers have privileges at UCI Medical Center, where we assist in the care of pediatric trauma patients and provide pediatric critical care and sedation services to pediatric patients in the UCI Burn Unit. Our physicians are also credentialed to provide telemedicine consultations for surrounding hospitals including Corona Regional Medical Center, Hoag Hospital, Healthbridge Children's Hospital, and Foothill Regional Medical Center.
