Description

The Data Engineer Intern will work closely with data engineers, data scientists, software developers, and IT to build, deploy, and optimize data pipelines and integrate data platform infrastructure for enabling analytics, reporting, and machine learning workloads at scale.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build, test, and validate robust production-grade data pipelines that can ingest, aggregate, and transform large datasets according to the specifications of the internal teams who will be consuming the data
  • Configure connections to source data systems and validate schema definitions with the teams responsible for the source data
  • Troubleshoot data pipeline issues as they arise
  • Evaluate new data platform infrastructure tools for proof of concept trials


Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or similar quantitative field
  • Master's Degree in progress for Computer Science, Data Engineering, or similar quantitative field

Experience:

  • 0 to 2 years of data management experience implementing data solutions or coursework in applicable discipline
  • Experience coding in Java, Scala, or Python is required
  • Experience with SQL databases; experience with NoSQL solutions is helpful

Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong expertise in computer science fundamentals: data structures, performance complexities, algorithms, and implications of computer architecture on software performance
  • Working knowledge software engineering fundamentals including version control using Git
  • Ability to create SQL queries of moderate complexity.
  • Strong trouble-shooting skills.
  • Strong technical aptitude.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or similar quantitative field
  • Master's Degree in progress for Computer Science, Data Engineering, or similar quantitative field

Experience:

  • 2+ years in a data management role

Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience working with HDFS or S3 storage environments
  • Experience with Apache Spark
  • Experience working in a Unix or Linux environment

Applicant should be actively enrolled at the University of North Texas.
