Summary of Position:

We help electric cooperatives build broadband networks for the communities they serve to close the digital divide in rural America. We provide specific resources to help electric co-ops succeed as community-focused telecommunications providers and offer proven leadership to meet our membership's unique needs to compete against large telecommunications companies that spend millions of dollars each year to advocate for their policies.  

We are looking to for a creative high performer to support and advance NRECA Broadband's communication capabilities. Working collaboratively with leadership and a cross-departmental team, this position focuses on proactively engaging with the media, developing and executing strategic communications campaigns, and cultivating strong relationships with broadband members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fosters strong relationships with reporters, especially in the tech and telecommunications sector, to further Association objectives.
  • Writes toolkits, columns, news releases, statements, advisories, op-eds, website content and other communications materials that advance the Association's perspective and cement NRECA Broadband and electric co-ops as leading stakeholders in rural broadband solutions.
  • Determines communications priorities related to major NRECA Broadband initiatives, working with subject matter experts, the communications staff, and our members.
  • Engages with NRECA Broadband's leadership and other NRECA departments to provide co-ops with compelling and effective resources in support of the Association's policy priorities.
  • Works with marketing, digital communications, and other departments across the organization to develop strategies that promote the value of NRECA Broadband and key resources for members.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Skills: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Affairs, Political Science or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in advocacy, politics, public or media relations or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience working for electric cooperatives, political campaigns or Capitol Hill.
  • Experience developing messages and impactful communications campaigns strongly preferred. 

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading.
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
