Description

At NorthBay Healthcare the Assistant Chief Engineer performs work and acts as a lead for Engineers in day-to-day operations, preventive maintenance, repairs and modifications to the healthcare facility physical and central utility plants, systems, equipment and grounds. This includes monitoring for quality work accomplished by in-house Engineering department staff and/or work performed by contractors. 

The Assistant Chief Engineer supports and works collaboratively with both Hospital Chief Engineers and the Hospital Facilities Management leadership team to ensure that consistent, high quality, cost effective, standard work is performed and provided to all customers by monitoring standards of practice, customer satisfaction and staff performance. The Assistant Chief Engineer provides primary support to the Chief Engineer in ensuring that requirements of all applicable Healthcare Facilities related codes, regulatory agencies and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ's), including OSHA, TJC, NFPA, Title 22, OSHPD, CDPH, etc. are met or exceeded.

The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for safe operation and maintenance of the Medical Facility's physical/central plant, utilities, systems and equipment, including but not limited to: steam boilers, emergency power generators, electrical distribution, refrigeration, plumbing, HVAC, vertical/horizontal transport, medical gas, patient care and fire/life safety related equipment. This includes implementing and maintaining competency training and qualifications for Engineering department staff to operate and maintain physical/central utility plant systems and equipment.

The Assistant Chief Engineer routinely interfaces with customers to gather information on work requests, provide status updates and to ensure that customers are satisfied with completed tasks. Ensures complete documentation of all work performed by staff or contractors within NorthBay Healthcare facilities.

Qualifications

  1. Education:  High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  2. Experience:
  • ​​​​​​​ Journeyman level (4 or more years' experience) in physical/central plant operations, including industrial electrical, mechanical, HVAC, water treatment, high and low pressure steam systems, plumbing, medical gas distribution, alarm monitoring systems, equipment (compressors, motors, pumps, VFD's) repairs and maintenance.
  • 4 or more years of hospital or healthcare engineering/facilities experience preferred. 
  1. Certifications:  One of the following is required within 180 days of hire:
  • Senior MECH certification, Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM), Certified Building Operator, Certified Healthcare Physical Environment Worker, or Stationary Engineer's license (A Bachelor's or Master's Degree removes this requirement). 
  • Air conditioning certification as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F is preferred.
  1. Licenses:  Must maintain a valid California driver's license.
  2. Skills:  Familiar with equipment and procedures used to trouble-shoot and repair physical/central utility plant systems and equipment. Good written and verbal communication skills required.  Intermediate computer skills required, including Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software, hard copy/online schematics and drawings, BAS/BMS Building Automation/Management Systems, and MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
