Job Description

 

Primary Purpose:

The Labor Relations intern will be responsible for assisting the Labor Relations team at Norfolk Southern in performing research and drafting responses to questions, claims, and grievances that arise under the collective bargaining agreement(s) for various employee crafts.  The position will also include the opportunity to research past practices, agreement interpretations, and arbitral precedent; as well as leverage analytical tools and historical data sets to defend Managements rights and maximize productivity.   Additionally, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to prepare briefs to defend Management's position in arbitration.  The ideal candidate will be very comfortable handling multiple priorities at a single time and have good verbal and written communication skills. 

This is a paid internship with a hybrid schedule in Atlanta, GA. The position will work out of our new Corporate HQ in Midtown Atlanta 3 days per week and will be remote 2 days per week. 

 

Principal Duties:
•    Prepare summary analysis and recommendations in discipline cases. 
•    Research labor agreements and arbitration decisions in connection with claims and grievances. 
•    Develop quick reference tools for routinely used agreements/arbitration decisions 
•    Prepare claims and grievance correspondence and respond to agreement specific questions.
•    Prepare written arbitration briefs and advocate/defend Management's position in arbitration

 

Education:
Pursing Degree Currently (Any)

Preferred Majors:
Labor Relations, Political Science, Business, Law, Industrial Relations, Personnel Management, Human Resources, as well as Liberal Arts degrees will be considered 

 

Skills and Abilities:
•    Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
•    Strong analytical thinking & decision-making skills
•    Objective thinking
•    Ability to study extensive reference materials, ask questions, resolve problems & grow from constructive feedback
•    Self-starter & time management 
 

Compensation:
•    Sophomore (28 to 59 credits) - $3,293/month
•    Junior (60 to 89 credits) - $3,553/month
•    Senior (90 or more credits) - $3,763/month
•    Law School / Graduate Student - $4,507/month
*Living stipend of $750/month is available to those who qualify.
