Senior Manager, FP&A – Strategic Analysis

 

The Strategic Analysis team within the Financial Planning & Analysis department is the Center of Excellence at Norfolk Southern for analytics and decision support, working closely with business partners to optimize commercial deals, service delivery, and strategic transactions. The Senior Manager role manages initiatives to solve complex open-ended problems, execute financial / operational analyses, and structure presentations / workshops with senior leaders to drive key decisions. You will routinely work and interact with cross-functional teams including Marketing, Operations, Finance, and IT. You will lead high-priority initiatives and will be a key stakeholder in the dialogue with senior leaders at Norfolk Southern to make data-driven decisions.

 

Principal Duties

  • Design and implement financial / operational models to assess the costs and benefits of key NS decisions
  • Lead the team through efficient and effective problem-solving processes from initial thought, hypothesis generation / testing, structuring, and convergence on a solution
  • Create C-Suite ready communication materials to support decision making
  • Deliver presentations and facilitate workshops with senior NS stakeholders
  • Build the team by teaching and mentoring

 

Work Experience:
Minimum: 2+ years

Preferred: 3-6 years in management consulting or similar role

Education

Minimum: Bachelor's degree
Preferred Majors: Economics, Finance, Engineering, Math, or other quantitative fields

Required Skills and Abilities:  

  • Effective and organized process manager who structures and executes with minimal guidance
  • Mastery of MS Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience using SQL to extract, join, and manipulate data across multiple databases
  • Fluency in Python, R, Matlab, etc. considered an asset

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in financial, strategic, and/or operations planning in freight rail, or a sector with a similar network-based business model (e.g., airlines, telecom, parcel/LTL carriers, etc.)
  • Expert at building financial and operational models in a wide range of contexts, including cost-benefit analysis and financial transaction support
  • Experience delivering written and verbal communication to senior executives
  • Experience leading a team through open-ended problem solving to support senior executive decision making
  • Experience coaching others to develop financial modeling, problem-solving, and communication competencies
