The Intermodal & Automotive (I&AU) division constitutes 62% of NS' volume and 34% of revenue for a Fortune 500 company. Norfolk Southern has the largest intermodal network in the Eastern United States. Our team of Data engineers provide clean data sets to end users, modeling data in a way that empowers end users to answer their own questions, providing critical support for both tactical and strategic decision makers.


Primary Purpose:
•Develop & maintain information flows, storage, and self-service mechanisms to provide Data to customers throughout the Intermodal & Automotive business groups.
•Transforms, tests, deploys, and documents data to ensure a “One Source of Truth” that enables operational decision-making.
•Ensures data governance guidelines and best practices are followed.


Principal Duties:
•Own the provision of clean, on-time datasets that are ready for analysis.
•Apply software engineering best practices such as version control, testing, and continuous integration to data management code.
•Maintain data dictionaries with descriptives.
•Improve our mechanisms for highly available data and infrastructure to provide uninterrupted, on-time business decisions.
•Evaluate existing database content and identify opportunities for enhancement.
•Build new infrastructure for information storage on various DBMS platforms.
•Design data extraction, transformation, and loading routines.
•Compile small-to-large data sets to drive direct, meaningful actions on the analysis of raw data.
•Engage with internal customers to develop actionable insights that are aligned with strategic goals.
•Coordinate with a variety of IT infrastructure teams to implement solutions.
•Assist manager & teammates on group projects and other administrative needs.

Job Related Experience:

  • Minimum Level: 2 years
  • Preferred Level: 3-5 years
