The Engineering department at Norfolk Southern plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and reliability of our rail network. We focus on infrastructure design and maintenance, developing and maintaining track, bridges, and terminals. Primary Duties:

Duties include a variety of mechanical activities relating to the repair of heavy machinery used for railroad track maintenance and manufacturing of parts and assembly of components used on track maintenance machines. Machinists must be capable of operating various machine tools and equipment, manual, NC and CNC milling machines and lathes.  Experience programming CNC machines is a must.  Machinists must know how to use all types of hand tools and other shop machines such as saws, drills, grinders etc.

 

Journeymen machinists must have a minimum of 3 years' experience in the layout and fitting of metal with or without drawings and have experience in sizing, turning, boring, grinding and finishing of metal. Welding and equipment maintenance experience is highly desired, preferably with vehicles, heavy equipment, power transmissions and fluid power (hydraulic and pneumatic) systems. Experience fabricating or manufacturing and assembly of a variety of mechanical systems is desirable.  Journeyman status is preferred but will consider those with less experience to fill student machinist positions.

 

Work Environment:

  • Able to work inside/outside and be on your feet daily
  • Must be committed to working safely and wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Environment:  Shop/Yard
  • Work on and around heavy equipment

 

Pay Rates for Charlotte Roadway Shop:

  • First 40 creditable days rate: $19.62 per hour (50% of full rate)  
  • The next 204 creditable days rate: $29.44 per hour (75% of full rate)  
  • The next 244 creditable days rate: $31.40 per hour (80% of full rate)  
  • Upon completion of 488 creditable days rate: $39.25 per hour (100% of full rate)
