Description

Performs all the functions of a Pharmacy Technician and assists the pharmacy manager with inventory management, drug distribution, cost containment, training and performance assessment.
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Up to 5 years of technical or other specialized training may also be required
Experience
  • 1 year of experience at the Washington Hospital Center required
  • 5 years of experience as a pharmacy technician in a large teaching hospital required
Licenses and Certifications
  • DC DOH - Pharmacy Technician Registration required
  • PTCB - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or equivalent national certification within 180 Days required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Requires ability to read and write, knowledge of grammar, medical terminology, and proficiency in basic mathematics, including fractions and decimal, and keyboard skills.
  • May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., typewriter, personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier and sterilizing equipment); the preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records and related data; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.
  • Performs all the functions of a pharmacy technician.
  • Assists the pharmacy manager with training and orientation of pharmacy technician students and new employees
  • Assesses performance and provides feedback to the managers regarding performance of the pharmacy technicians in their assigned areas. Completes all relevant check lists with appropriate comments.
  • Assures appropriate inventory levels are kept in the assigned work area and works with the Clinical Specialist to develop max and min levels. Oversees the replenishment and adjustment of medications as needed.
  • Works with the Pyxis manager to monitor delete, add, increase, or decrease quantities based on medications usage and the Pyxis and Rx Auditor Report.
  • Is accountable for routine audits of drug storage, discharged patient medications, cart exchange, IV batch exchange, Pyxis drug distribution, or other audits as assigned by the pharmacy manager.
  • Assures the monthly patient care area and departmental inspections, including appropriate documentations, are complete.
  • Under the supervision of the licensed Pharmacist, prepares oral, topical, and parenteral medications for dispensing to patients, including the selection, labeling, and packaging of appropriate pharmaceuticals, and filling of medications carts.
  • Enters physician orders into the hospital computer system to update/edit patient profiles and charges.
  • Assists patients, nurses, physicians, and others with medication order requests and pharmacy related needs.
  • Fills and replaces medications in the automated medication dispensing machines and transports to appropriate nursing units(s).
  • Prepares IV admixtures using aseptic techniques, including STATS, parental nutrition bags, and cytotoxic agents.
  • Delivers and retrieves medications, including narcotics, and pharmacy supplies to/from patient care and satellite pharmacy areas.
  • Compounds products in bulk or per individual order and prepares private stock orders and individual unit-of-use packaging, when not otherwise available.
  • Completes and maintains controlled substances inventory log/records. Reviews patient medicine administration record (Kardex). Compares dosage with Pharmacy records; notes discrepancies; and informs Pharmacist for follow-up.
