Description

The RN Psychiatric Transfer Coordinator is performing at the top of their licensure to review transfer requests for patients who require inpatient psychiatric care, determine that patient's eligibility and appropriateness for a psychiatric unit within Medstar Health, and communicate details of the transfer request and the potential needs of the patient with the on-call behavioral health provider.
Education

  • Bachelor's degree required and
  • Master's degree preferred
Experience
  • 5-7 years Experience in an inpatient psychiatric setting, psychiatric emergency department, performing crisis evaluations, or other related experience required and
  • Leadership experience and experience working with large healthcare systems preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Upon Hire required and
  • AANC certification in psychiatric nursing Upon Hire preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Microsoft Teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Ability to read and understand medical records required.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Reviews transfer requests for inpatient psychiatry from within MedStar Health and from facilities outside of Medstar Health.
  • Coordinates with the MedStar Health Transfer Office, the psychiatric unit's on-call provider, and any other relevant parties to support the safe and timely transfer of psychiatric patients to inpatient behavioral health within Medstar Health.
  • Coordinates transfers for patients that require transfer outside of the Medstar System for behavioral health who are boarding in Medstar emergency departments.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date information on behavioral health bed availability throughout the MedStar system.
  • Accurately documents and records all activities related to psychiatric transfers in accordance with state, local, and system guidelines and laws.
  • Works with system leadership for the development and implementation of process improvement initiatives relating to the efficacy and efficiency of the behavioral health service line.
  • Assists in the implementation of service line goals as dictated by the system and service line strategic goals.
  • Collects and organizes program metrics as indicated by project guidelines.
  • Works as a member of project teams to assist in carrying out strategic initiatives.
  • Maintains directory information for all emergency departments and inpatient psychiatric units throughout the state as it pertains to the transfer of psychiatric patients into and out of the Medstar Health system.
