General Summary of Position
The incumbent in this position is a skilled rehabilitation technician who under direct supervision aides and assists Occupational Therapists (OT), Physical Therapists (PT), and Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) with the treatment of their patients. They may also be required to perform non-patient care related duties such as inventory, supply ordering, transportation of patients, and administrative duties as assigned. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under direct supervision, aids patients in practicing exercises, functional activities and checking vital signs as directed by Occupational Therapists (OT's), Physical Therapists (PT's), and Speech Pathologists (SLP's).
  • Under direct supervision, assists PT/OT with patients receiving wound care therapy. This includes preparation and clean-up, applying dressings, and patient transfers in and out of wound care area.
  • Under direct supervision, properly fits and directs patients in the care and use of crutches, walkers, and other ambulatory devices, such as slings, braces, orthotics, etc.
  • Assists OT with Activities of Daily Living treatment utilizing appropriate adaptive equipment as directed.
  • Assist in the provision of treatments; assists OT/PT/SLP in positioning, handling, and stabilizing patients; transports equipment needed as requested by OT/PT/SLP.
  • Organizes, maintains and cleans treatment areas and equipment.
  • Transports patients to and from the department of PM&R, assists in the preparation of patients for transport and patient transfers.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and orders equipment according to par levels. Maintains all equipment and/or applicable logs.
  • Performs administrative duties as necessary to include, but not limited to: faxing, scanning/indexing, calling patients, scheduling patients, and form development/enhancement.
  • Coordinates and prioritizes own schedule in relation to demands of patient treatment and other department responsibilities.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Bachelor's degree in a medical science or exercise science preferred

    Experience

    • Prior work experience not required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patient, the medical and professional staff, and the public.
    • Ability to read, understand and respond to detailed oral and written English language instructions.
    • Ability to communicate clearly.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of relevant therapy practices.
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
    • Must have the ability to learn and integrate protocols and precautions related to patient treatments.
