General Summary of Position
The Regional Director of Medical Staff Operations is an operational leadership role within MedStar Health, responsible for overseeing and enhancing the operational efficiency of medical staff services across multiple regionally based entities. Plays a crucial role in supporting medical credentialing, privileging, and related activities, ensuring these processes are conducted effectively, in compliance with regulatory standards, and with a focus on continuous improvement. Lead initiatives aimed at optimizing operations, increasing customer satisfaction, and fostering collaboration across the healthcare system.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and direction for medical staff operations across the region, aligning departmental goals with the broader organizational strategy.
  • Develops and implements operational and strategic initiatives to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of credentialing, privileging, and other medical staff processes.
  • Leads and mentors a team of medical staff professionals, ensuring high performance, professional development, and engagement.
  • Oversee the credentialing, re-credentialing and privileging processes for medical staff across multiple entities, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards; where applicable, standardize processes and practices across the region to ensure consistency, accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Manages resources, budgets, and staffing needs to optimize the operational effectiveness of medical staff services.
  • Leads process improvement initiatives aimed at reducing turnaround times, eliminating bottlenecks, and enhancing overall operational efficiency; identify opportunities to streamline and automate credentialing, privileging, and related activities, leveraging technology and best practices.
  • Collaborates with other departments to implement solutions that improve data management, workflow, and reporting while building and maintaining strong relationships with medical staff leadership, department leaders, and external partners to facilitate collaboration and alignment.
  • Oversight of MSO management and support of select committees including credentials committee, medical executive committee, medical staff meetings and the Quality and Safety Professional Affairs Committee (QSPAC).
  • Develops and implement strategies to improve customer satisfaction for providers, administrators, and other stakeholders interacting with medical staff services.
  • Serves as the regional point of contact for resolving complex issues related to credentialing, privileging, regulatory agencies and medical staff operations within supported entities.
  • Ensures regionally aligned medical staff operations comply with relevant regulatory requirements (e.g., The Joint Commission, National Committee for Quality Assurance, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and other accrediting bodies); conduct regular audits and reviews of credentialing and privileging files, processes, and outcomes to ensure high standards of quality and compliance.
  • Utilizes data analytics to monitor performance to ensure the integrity and security of medical staff data across all facilities in the region; identify trends, and drive decision-making in medical staff operations; implement corrective actions and best practices as necessary to maintain compliance and improve service quality.
  • Prepares and presents reports to senior leadership on the status of credentialing, re-credentialing, privileging, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Works collaboratively with the Assistant Vice President - Medical Staff Operations and Continuing Professional Education, Senior Director for Central Verification Office, supported entity Vice Presidents of Medical Affairs, legal, provider enrollment, managed care and medical staff leadership to develop, revise and implement policies, procedures, documents and training related to credentialing, privileging, and medical staff services.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree In health/hospital administration or related field required and
    • Master's degree preferred
    • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

    Experience

    • 5-7 years Progressive experience managing and leading medical staff functions for a large academic medical center or health system including direct oversight of medical staff credentialing. required and
    • 8-10 years Demonstrated experience in regulatory compliance as it relates to the organized Medical Staff. required and
    • Demonstrated experience in credentialing, privileging, physician performance/peer review processes and working with physician leaders preferred
    • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.

    Licenses and Certifications

    • CPMSM - Certified Professional Medical Services Management Upon Hire preferred and
    • National Association of Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) certification Upon Hire preferred

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of business tools such as Microsoft office or like products.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state regulations and standards for the provision of professional education of healthcare providers.

    • Skilled problem solver, with ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities, workloads, and timelines.

    This position has a hiring range of $111,779 - $201,427
