Job Summary: 

MedStar Health is looking for a PRN Polysomnographic Technician to join our team at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center! 

As a polysomnographic technologist, you will work under the general supervision of the clinical director or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care and education. A Polysomnographic Technologist can perform the duties defined for a Polysomnogram Technician and may also provide oversight of other staff.

Primary Duties: 

  • Performs sleep studies gathers and analyzes patient information for preparation and completion of procedure. Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs and determine final testing procedures with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols. Complete and verify documentation. Follow “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxygen saturation, respiratory and heart rates). Perform polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracking quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and adjust, if necessary. Follow “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Implement appropriate interventions. Oversees and performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions. Scoring sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines. Score clinical events according to center specific protocols. Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep, wake and clinical event data. Explain the pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to the patient. Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning. Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted standards. Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals. Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting. Follow procedural protocols: Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP, and oxygen titration, to ensure collection of appropriate data.  

  • Maintains a clean, safe, prepared work environment Prepares room for patient. Cleans and processes all equipment for sterilization. Restocks and requests supplies that have dwindled.  

  • Maintains current knowledge, certification, and licensure. Identifies learning needs in self and attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the department. Completes all mandatory requirements within allotted time for completion. Understands and implements changes made to the AASM Manual for Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events. Attends monthly Tech Meetings.  

  • Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees, communicating unit knowledge appropriate to the committee and back to the department/unit.  

  • Registers all outpatients for study. Make beds and assure sleep rooms are orderly. 

 

 

 

Qualifications:  

  • Associate degree with an emphasis in polysomnography or completion of a polysomnography program of no less than one year duration associated with a state licensed and a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency. 

  • Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (BRPT) or as a Registered Sleep Technologist (RST).  

  • Successfully completes at least 10 CEU's (continuing education credits) approved for credit by the AAST or BRPT before the end of each fiscal year.  

  • Experience as a registered polysomnographic technologist.  

  • BLS (Basic Life Support). 

  • Licensed by the Maryland State Board of Physicians. 


This position has a hiring range of $25.35 - $42.23
