General Summary of Position
MedStar Health is looking for a Perfusionist to join our team at Washington Hospital Center!
As a Perfusionist, you will operate and maintain the heart lung machine and other related ancillary equipment during open heart and other related procedures. Monitors, interprets, and maintains various parameters while on extracorporeal circulation, ensuring safe and adequate perfusion.

Primary Duties:
Sets-up heart lung machine by appropriately priming, calibrating and assembling necessary equipment. Prepares perfusion record, including medical history and calculates patient parameters to be monitored. Calculates heparin dose to be administered.
Monitors and documents all physiologic variables on the perfusion record, according to established protocol. Interprets test results and monitors parameter changes, e.g., blood gas analysis, electrolyte and acid-base balances, hematocrit, etc.
Administers medications, blood and/or blood products, anesthetic agents as directed by physician and/or established protocol. Responsible for induction of hypothermia and administration of cardioplegia according to established protocol. Sets-up and maintains autotransfusion, Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD's) and Cardiopulmonary Support (CPS). Repairs and/or replaces cardiovascular circuits during emergent situations.
Maintains related perfusion equipment, e.g., rotating/cleaning modules, performing battery status checks and quality control tests, as appropriate. Maintains, stocks, and rotates inventory related to open heart perfusion.
Documents and maintains perfusion records, i.e., pump records, perfusion related data in Open Heart registry, etc. 10. Participates in product evaluations and in-services. Orients new personnel and/or trains students, as directed.
Qualifications:
Associate or higher-level degree, or equivalent training such as graduation from an accredited school of perfusion technology.
Certified Perfusionist or certification-eligible by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
Once certified, must maintain certification according to American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion requirements (annual recertification).
1 to 3 years' experience preferred.
