General Summary of Position

Please note: There is travel required to provide training classes, that may require the nurse to arrive as early as 7am.  This position may also occasionally require travel into DC, but it will always be scheduled in advance. 

 

Serves as a clinical consultant and resource person to Nursing leaders, other clinical specialists and educators, physicians, preceptors, Medical Assistants, and Nurses from ambulatory, students, outside agencies and affiliated institutions to positively impact standards of care, clinical care delivery, and patient outcomes. Serves as a consultant in the areas of clinical specialty, the orientation of new staff and career advancement development. Acts as a liaison by establishing effective collegial relationships; initiates facilitates and participates in performance improvement and evidence-based activities having implications for the understanding/improvement of clinical activities and nursing practice. Demonstrates an understanding of the group process; uses adult learning methods in working with individuals and groups to impact standards of care and delivery. Assists in coordinating and implementing educational/orientation/quality improvement programs Facilitate the education process of staff and students.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Provides coverage for RN Education Manager in his/her absence.
  • Provides consultation as an expert nurse for specific patient populations to physicians and other members of the clinical team.
  • Actively mentors and supports colleagues and staff. Supports and encourages the professional development of the clinical staff and collaborates within and across the organization to identify internal and external resources available for staff.
  • Provides expertise for competency development and competence assessment across the Division and coaches and provides feedback to improve professional practice within MedStar Medical Group.
  • Collaborates with nurse educators from MedStar Ambulatory Services, and with Corporate Quality and Safety, to work towards a consistent, evidence-based approach to education across MedStar Health.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and development in the field of nursing practice, clinical instruction, and nursing education through a variety of professional activities including, but not limited to, reading the appropriate literature and attending related seminars and conferences.
  • Participates as staff development/education expert on committees, task forces, focus groups, and projects to support MedStar Medical Group and MedStar Health system-wide initiatives.
  • Demonstrates the clinical expertise, leadership, management, communication skills, and knowledge of adult learning theory and principles necessary to develop education programs and achieve optimal educational outcomes.
  • Plans and conducts orientation of new nursing personnel that facilitates a new team member's transition to the work environment and meets competency assessment requirements in conformance with departmental objectives and accreditation standards.
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates designated ambulatory=based education programs and consultative services, including the use of available technologies to provide education across the MedStar Health region.
  • Assesses learning needs through formal and informal approaches to data collection to determine specific education needs and utilizes teaching techniques that promote critical thinking and evidence-based practice incorporating principles of adult learning theory.
  • Identifies, coordinates, and plans educational offerings for MedStar Medical Group staff, with consideration of but not limited to mandatory regulations, safety, performance improvement, new equipment, technologies, infection prevention, and clinical advancements and evaluates the effectiveness and learning outcomes of educational activities.
  • Facilitates team building within quality, safety and education department as well as throughout MedStar Medical Group, and assists operational and physician leaders in initiating and adapting to change.
  • Consistent with MedStar Medical Group and MedStar Health's mission, vision, goals, and values, promote an environment that embraces continuous learning and supports a framework of shared decision making.
  • Embodies, promotes, educates and role models all principles of High Reliability and development of a just culture. Incorporates evidence into all staff development and clinical education activities. May assist with the development of site-based protocols, as directed.
  • Monitors Patient Safety Event Reports and assists operational leaders in investigating events. Assists with development and implementation of performance improve action plans and analyzation of effectiveness of interventions. Assists Quality, Safety & Education team with the development of solutions that can be applied across all ambulatory settings.
  • Collaborates with human resources and quality, safety and education team to coordinate Medical Assistant and Nursing Professional extern programs. Acts as a clinical resource and liaison for externs. Assists operational leaders with appropriate placement, management and evaluation of externs.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree of Science in Nursing required or
    • Master's degree in Nursing, Health Care or other related field preferred

    Experience

    • 3-4 years Progressively more responsible job related experience in an acute care setting required and
    • Experience in teaching or professional development and experience in ambulatory setting preferred

    Licenses and Certifications

    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Current license to practice nursing as a registered nurse in the State of Maryland required and
    • Specialty Certification in nursing staff professional development or in specific clinical specialty preferred and
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Considerable knowledge of current clinical literature, research in practice, and therapeutic clinical interventions.
    • Knowledge of the principles of adult learning.
    • Skill in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs to meet the needs of the nursing department.
    • Considerable interpersonal skills.
    • Considerable oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to provide therapeutic interactions with patients/clients.
    • Ability to utilize electronic medical records for optimal flow of documentation and for audits and analysis of safety events.
    • Ability to incorporate research findings into standards of care.


    This position has a hiring range of $87,318 - $149,094
