General Summary of Position
Provides professional nursing care for clinic patients following established standards and practices.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Performs general nursing care to patients.  Administers prescribed medications, vaccines, treatments, and procedures in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.
  • Observes, records, and reports patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians. Dispenses medication as directed.  Documentation is complete, accurate, and legible.
  • Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination.  Screens patients for appropriate information.  Instructs patients in the collection of samples and tests.
  • Performs patient telephone triage, assesses needs, and coordinates needs with medical staff. Monitors phone notes entered to assure timely response to all calls and appropriate resolution of the patients' needs.
  • Triages walk-in patients and provides them with guidance, determining the most appropriate course of action for the patient to take regarding obtaining an appointment in the clinic, referral to another facility, or home care advice.  Consults with the provider as necessary.
  • Dispenses telephone advice and recommendations from the provider as requested by the provider.
  • Assists in supervising other clinical staff in absence of Nurse Clinician II.
  • Assists in education of clinical and administrative staff to elevate care and service offered by the department.
  • Adapts to and excels in the use of all electronic programs utilized in the division/department to include, but not limited to, Electronic Health Records (EHR), Azyxxi, Outlook, and general computer applications.  Adheres to all HIPPA, MEDSTAR, and GUH Privacy policies.
  • Observes and complies with Joint Commission standards at all times in order to provide patients with safe, effective, and responsive care.  Embraces Joint Commission knowledge and applies this to the work environment every day.
  • Educates patient and family about diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition, and maintenance of health and wellness.
  • Supports and participates in implementation of clinic improvement projects developed by Nurse Clinician II and Administrator.
  • Assists in orientation and training of clinical staff and serves as a mentor during probationary period.
  • Enhances patient satisfaction by providing concerned, personal, prompt and courteous customer service that supports the patients' right to dignity and privacy.
  • Educates patient and family about diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition, and maintenance of health and wellness.
  • Performs quality control functions of assigned area, as directed.
  • Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information.  Posts tests and examination results.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures; attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.  Maintains clinical expertise by attending in service programs.Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Associate's degree Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. required and
    • Bachelor's degree B.S.N. preferred
    • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

    Experience

    • 1-2 years 2 years of professional nursing experience; at least 1 year of telephone triage, pediatric experience and previous use of electronic medical records required and
    • 1-2 years Previous outpatient experience preferred
    • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.

    Licenses and Certifications

    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Registered Nurse, licensed in the District of Columbia; required and
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
    • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care;
    • Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care;
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.


    This position has a hiring range of $34.98 - $62.52
