The Medical Assistant Educator coordinates, plans, implements, and evaluates educational programs designed to meet the assessed needs of MedStar Ambulatory staff and patients in a continuing effort to ensure quality care and maintain current standards of practice. Serves as a resource/consultant/ facilitator to others in MedStar Health. Coaches' others for safety and engages in orientation and competency assessment of Medical Assistant staff. Collaborates with leadership, content experts, and staff to facilitate the achievement of educational goals.

Primary Duties:
Role models high-reliability principles and fosters a just culture; encourages patient safety event reporting including identification of near-miss opportunities for improvement; seeks system solutions to problems; assists site leaders to monitor, investigate and resolve patient safety events; disseminates safety solutions across the system. Assesses learning needs and preferences of staff and leaders using various sources; analyzes the results and disseminates findings from the needs assessment to Ambulatory leadership. Collaborates across MedStar Health with leadership, ambulatory sites, Quality and Safety, and other departments such as informatics, nursing, infection prevention, environmental safety, biomedical, lab, pharmacy, vendors, and physicians and staff to develop needed programs.
Assists individuals, departments, and work teams in designing and facilitating educational activities through consultation with content experts. Incorporates evidence-based practice and tools into educational programs. Assists in the development and implementation of systemwide workshops and online training programs. Designs learning environment, develops instructional objectives, content, teaching, methodologies, audiovisual support, participant handout, and evaluation tool to achieve optimal learning outcomes. Maintains flexibility in teaching to optimize outcomes. Utilizes adult learner techniques and mixed methods of instruction. Collects and utilizes data to inform efficacy and sustainability of education. Revises educational programs and materials based on evaluative data.
Performs systemwide site rounding and assessments; documents findings and assists in the development of action plans; follows up to measure improvement. Provides training and education within sites; assists MAQCs with assessment and training needs in their assigned sites. In conjunction with leadership and target audience, plans educational opportunities to meet identified needs and supports learners' achievement of required competencies. Annually, or as indicated, assures that educational objectives are measurable and realistic. Maintains department records, reports, and files. Mentors staff, clients, and leadership to help incorporate class content into performance or achievement of a healthy lifestyle. Develops and provides ongoing coaching to staff and clients with the goal of improving critical thinking skills.
Functions as a resource person to MAQCs, staff and leaders in problem-solving related to area of clinical expertise. Mentors staff & department team in professional development, career goals, and reaching highest potential in job performance and skills. Provides feedback regarding participant performance to the participant and other appropriate individuals, using critical conversation and constructive feedback techniques. Communicate educational outcomes to appropriate leadership.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED.
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program.
5-7 years Clinical experience.
3-4 years Progressively responsible experience in an ambulatory healthcare setting, preferably in staff education and training.
Curriculum development, program evaluation and revision in clinical and classroom settings. Knowledge of adult learning methods, curriculum development, educational outcome measurements and recent ambulatory clinical care.
CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) by American Association of Medical Assistants.
RMA (Registered Medical Assistant) through American Medical Technologies or equivalent.
BLS (Basic Life Support).
Experience as a medical assistant quality coordinator (MAQC) preferred.
Bachelor's degree preferred.
