Description

Provides accurate language interpreting services in both English and target language to non-English and limited English speaking patients. Identifies and triages needs and issues to ensure language access and culturally sensitivity; provides appropriate care for these patients and families in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of 40-hr Medical interpreting Training with language proficiency required
  • Fluency in English and Target language with familiarity with medical terminology required
  • Degree in higher education preferred
  • Minimum of 6 hours of Medical Interpreting Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within the past year preferred
Experience
  • 1-2 years of medical interpreting experience required
Licenses and Certifications
  • Certif Healthcare Interpreter - CHI from Commision for Healthcare Interpreters within 1-1/2 Yrs required
  • Certified Medical Interpreters - CMI preferred or
  • International Medical Interpreters Association Certificate of Accreditation preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to identify and address obstacles to high-quality patient care and satisfaction; defuse stressful situations; and to work in multi-culturally diverse environments.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Well-developed listening, interpretative and conciliatory skills.
  • Some proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and TEAMs.
  • Provides oral language interpreting between patients, MWHC medical professionals, personnel and patient's family or representatives.
  • Provides cultural mediation as needed.
  • Performs a variety of administrative and clerical tasks including, but not limited to answering phones, triaging and dispatching interpreters, entering appointments in the department schedule, scheduling interpreters, collaborating with vendors, collaborating with counterparts in the department, etc.
  • Assists in the identification of service needs for admitted, new and incoming LEP patients and facilitates other aspects of service delivery.
  • Participates in rotating, after hours on-call program.
  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of all interpreted conversations, including written documents concerning the patient's medical condition and treatment.
  • Maintains the highest level of professionalism, correctness and neutrality in providing language interpretation services to MWHC patients.
  • Provides training and in-services to hospital staff and departments on Standard Practices and Cultural insights.
  • Receives and stocks equipment and supplies and maintains orderly supply and utility rooms.
  • Attends staff meetings, ongoing educational offerings, and participate in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
