Description

Performs various routine and ad hoc, clinical, and operational data analyses in support of either departmental coworkers or other MedStar audiences. Identifies opportunities for cost and quality improvements and converts data from multiple information systems into knowledge that helps enable change.
Education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field required
Experience
  • 1-2 years Experience supporting customer groups through data analysis and graphical presentation; experience working with relational databases required and
  • 1-2 years Related experience in healthcare management or healthcare consulting preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • No special certification, registration or licensure required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Access software applications.
  • Working knowledge of statistical software, and Microsoft Word and PowerPoint applications preferred.
  • Verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills preferred.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Analysis of Data: Performs clinical and operational data analysis (staffing levels, clinical utilization, volume analysis, cost analysis) with outputs that are clear and relevant to the users. Designs analysis methodology and tailors data outputs based on customer needs and understanding. Under the supervision of others, provides internal documentation to ensure replicability as well as providing audit trails in all work. Completes assignments in an efficient, quality-focused manner. Communicates any quality issues to IS or appropriate data source provider. Validates and interprets data results, either independently or with assistance. Makes recommendations to management.
  • Assists in planning work to be done in concert with the needs of the department. Develops and maintains work plans as appropriate to the work. Integrates work with all other departmental initiatives.
  • Assists in the development, achievement and evaluation of department goals, objectives, budget, policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with governmental and accreditation regulations in any recommendations for performance improvement.
  • Assists Risk and Insurance (change Manager to Director) with physician/hospital PL insurance coverage for GFIL program. Includes assistance with database management of physician coverage, physician underwriting and review of contracts to verify coverage. Also includes working with the VP of Risk Management, our actuary and the finance department to develop GFIL PL budget and allocation of premium throughout the system. Ensures and validates the reliability of input data.
  • Assists Risk Management Department by supporting meetings as necessary prepares meeting materials and ensures appropriate communications before, during, and after the meeting.
  • Data sources: Learns and understands appropriate MedStar and external data sources and their underlying systems in a manner that enables meaningful and accurate analysis work. Utilizes appropriate data sources and definitions for each analysis. Understands the limits of use for each data source as well as the differences between similar elements in different data sets.
  • Develops and maintains good working relationships with other MedStar associates and ensures excellent two-way communication with all appropriate audiences: Coworkers, departmental management, MedStar Management and other customers.
  • Makes suggestions for improvements to processes, outcomes and behaviors to achieve departmental and MedStar goals.
  • Presents data to management with the simplicity of design in a clear, easy-to-understand format. Complex ideas are communicated with clarity, precision, and efficiency in a manner that ensures accurate comprehension by the recipient.
  • Tools: Builds and maintains accurate, effective databases as required by individual projects. Ensures and validates the reliability of input data. Demonstrates proficiency with data mining and manipulation tools including Excel and Access.
  • Under the direction of leadership, the Data Analyst prepares weekly, monthly, quarterly and bi-annual reports in support of business operations and quality improvement/patient safety initiatives, primarily related to the professional liability claims program, but also in support of other initiatives within the Risk Management Department. Reports are distributed to many within MedStar, including hospital presidents, VPMAs, Risk Managers, the GFIL Board, the Audit and Compliance Committee of the MedStar Board. Reports include tabular, graphical, and written analysis formats.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Support Risk and Insurance Director with insurance renewals, exposure data, applications and other information related to the applicable coverage and their claims.
  • Assists Risk and Insurance Director with all other insurance programs that require the submission of underwriting data and loss histories.
