Exciting Opportunity with the MedStar Health Facility Coding Department!

We're growing—and so is our commitment to education!! The Coding Department is thrilled to announce the development of a brand-new education program, designed to deliver expanded resources and support for coding professionals across MedStar Health.  To accomplish this goal, we are currently seeking an experienced Coding Educator to be an integral part of this new and expanding team!

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides consultation and expertise to internal management in the planning, implementation, and delivery of coding education. Acts as a referential resource for coding and reimbursement guidelines.
  • Assesses the educational needs of coding associates and physicians and develops programs or researches educational resources to meet those needs.
  • Develops and contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations.
  • Develops all training materials and coding aids for both formal training and use by coders in daily work.
  • Oversees and coordinates the certification program for coding associates; makes recommendations for credentialing and certification.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive education plan that should include AHA (American Hospital Association) Coding Clinic publications, OIG (Office Inspector General) plan AMA (American Medical Association) CPT Assistant and/or other publications for potential coding education topics.
  • Collaborates with Director of CDI and/or designee on collaborative education and/or workflows between CDI and coding associates.
  • Participates in hiring process and educational planning for coding associates.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Serves as a technical resource for all involved personnel; ensures that information is accurate and current, meeting professional coding standards.
  • Performs coding quality reviews in the setting of the coder educational program.
  • Identifies and evaluates innovative educational methodology that may be appropriate for the targeted audience; incorporates new methodology as appropriate to enhance and update the effectiveness of education and skills development programs.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Bachelor's degree preferred

    Experience

    • 5-7 years Experience in coding to include coding auditing, inpatient and outpatient coding in an acute care setting required
    • Experience working with physicians and other clinical professionals required
    • Experience working in documentation review required
    • Experience in coding/DRG(Diagnosis Related Groups) analysis required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • CCS-Certified Coding Specialist CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) certification from AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Strong knowledge of MS DRG (Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups), APR DRG (All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups) and outpatient reimbursement methodologies Strong inpatient and outpatient coding skills.
    • Ability to identify and interpret strategic and operational training/development needs.
    • Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
    • Strong oral communication skills and the ability to deliver presentations to large groups.
    • Employee development and performance management skills.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of coding standards, TJC (the joint commission) standards, HIPPA (health insurance portability and accountability act) and regulatory requirement.


    This position has a hiring range of $70,428 - $131,310
