General Summary of Position
Evaluates laboratory specimens for testing adequacy, prepares specimens for testing, and assists in the performance of routine laboratory tests as designated in assigned section of the Clinical Pathology Laboratory.  This is a PRN position, working hours will be day or evening shift as needed, mainly on weekends and holidays based on departmental needs.  


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates clinical laboratory equipment, prepares specimens for analysis and determines specimen adequacy for testing. Performs designated routine laboratory tests according to established guidelines.
  • Reviews/verifies test results, recognizes abnormal/unusual results and communicates same to appropriate personnel.
  • Performs quality control analysis to ensure instrument readings are accurate, and documents results.
  • Notifies unit when unacceptable specimens are received or when critical results are reported and documents actions in computer.
  • Operates and troubleshoots instrumentation used in testing, loads reagents used for testing, and performs preventive maintenance. Resolves routine problems, where possible.
  • Monitors and maintains appropriate supply inventory and notifies designated personnel of shortages.
  • Records refrigerator and freezer temperatures, empties/discards specimen samples according to established policy and procedures.
  • Where possible, resolves customer service related problems according to established department protocol.
  • Decontaminates counter surfaces, instruments and general work area according to laboratory protocol.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • May require up to l year of technical or other specialized training, such as that which would be acquired in a clinical laboratory assistant program.

    Experience

    • 1 to 3 years experience required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Requires the ability to read and write; and knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals.
    • May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., typewriter, personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, sterilizing equipment, blood pressure cuff, or tables); the preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records and related data; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.


    This position has a hiring range of $20.941 - $31.852
