Senior Counsel, Payments Gateway - 12 Month Fixed Term Contract Overview
Mastercard is a technology company in the global payments business, connecting customers, financial institutions, merchants, governments and businesses worldwide and enabling them to use secure and convenient electronic forms of payment. Mastercard Payment Gateway Services is part of Mastercard's Enterprise Gateway Solutions division and provides omni-channel gateway processing, fraud management and ancillary value added services to merchants, acquirers and other partners.

Mastercard has identified a need for a senior legal resource on a full time basis for 12 months in the European region to assume the responsibilities of a commercial lawyer to help further develop the business of the Mastercard Payment Gateway Services and the broader Enterprise Gateway Solutions group.

This full-time role may be based either in London, Dublin, Waterloo or Lisbon and is primarily focused on providing regional support to the gateway business in Europe. However, the legal team has a global role and so the role may require some travel and ability to support other time zones. Furthermore, the successful candidate may need to support other business needs within the region of the Enterprise Gateway Solutions division and collaborate with other members of Mastercard privacy, regulatory affairs, IP and various product and commercial legal teams.

The Role
• Reporting into the Senior Managing Counsel, Payments Gateway who is based in Singapore, you will:
o Provide high quality advice to the business on a broad range of commercial and contractual matters
o Draft complex technology services agreements
o Handle cross-border contractual negotiations with merchants, suppliers and financial institutions, and contribute to commercial tender responses.
o Help to identify and protect intellectual property and confidential data.
o Provide legal and business risk assessment and analysis
o Take responsibility for special projects while continuing to handle a steady stream of day-to-day matters
o Ensure compliance with current company policies and procedures and identify areas for improvement
o Understand and advise on local regulatory requirements
o Manage external advisors within agreed policy and budget
o Develop strong relationships with sales, professional services and senior management within the company, particularly for the Europe region
o Assist the resolution of customer issues
o Review and approve product constructs
o Provide training to sales and product teams.
o Work with other functions within the Enterprise Gateway division for example Compliance
o Advise on and manage regulatory issues in Europe that impact the business e.g. DORA, NIS2 etc.
o Provide informal guidance to junior team members
• Please note that these duties and responsibilities are a guideline and by no means comprehensive. Additional tasks may be added on from time to time at the discretion of the Head of Legal.

All About You
• A qualified lawyer with a solid academic and training background.
• Strong English language skills necessary. Other languages an advantage.
• PQE experience, including some time working in-house, preferably at a multinational company.
• Strong drafting and negotiating skills across a range of commercial contracts and the ability to analyze complex situations and identify the core issues.
• A self—starting fast learner able to gain rapid familiarity with our products and services and maintain knowledge of those changing products and services
• Exposure to a broad range of commercial law issues.
• A working knowledge of data privacy issues
• Interest in gaining experience working with other product, legal and compliance teams.
• Experience of working on cross-border agreements, and with multiple jurisdictions and time zones.
• Solutions orientated and able to work flexibly under pressure and to tight deadlines
• A lively interest in the business of the Company and an enjoyment of working in a fast-paced environment.
• A proven ability to work independently and as team player coordinating and communicating with Mastercard teams, where necessary.
• Experience in managing local counsel to ensure compliance in foreign jurisdictions.

Experience in technology, fintech, processing and/or payments agreements preferred
