Registered Nurse – RN Location: Worcester and Holyoke The staff nurse is a registered nurse who is responsible for assuring competent, compassionate, individualized, nursing care for specific patients and families, including delegation to and supervision of non-professional and support staff. The staff nurse is responsible and accountable for the overall nursing care management of a designated group of patients. They collaborate with the physicians and members of the Care Team to achieve optimal Patient outcomes. They also collaborate with the practice leadership toward efficient and effective personnel and unit management. In this role within the Division of Pediatric Cardiology, the registered nurse (RN) will work collaboratively with the team of physicians, advanced nurse practitioners and other ancillary team members in caring for patients in the ambulatory outpatient setting. Our highly specialized services aim to meet the unique needs of infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired heart disease. The RN will deliver nursing care based on scientific principles and the use of standard nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, evaluation, planning and implementation). The role will involve work in the MGH main campus ambulatory clinic as well as the various community-based practice locations encompassing eastern, southern, central and western Massachusetts specifically our Worcester and Holyoke offices. General Nursing Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to: - Perform telephone triage and address patient electronic portal messages in collaboration with physicians and nurse practitioners and communicate care plans with the care team - Document relevant patient information and patient interactions in the electronic medical record and collaborate with providers who oversee the patients - Facilitate prescription refills and medication prior authorizations - Communicate test results to families per the provider's instruction - Deliver and maintain a therapeutic care environment for patients and families, assist with school letters and communicate with specialists and multidisciplinary teams as appropriate - Anticipate clinic scheduling conflicts, work with administrative and clinical staff to resolve issues, and assist in communication with patients and families at and around the time of appointment - Perform electrocardiogram, measure vital signs, and obtain initial history and physical assessment in collaboration with the medical assistant staff - Assist in coordination and scheduling of patients in the Fetal Care Program and Cardiac Surgery and Catheterization Program Facilitate and support adolescents who are transitioning to the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program The RN will collaborate with their respective staff members and with other practice personnel in maintaining standards of quality care and service. In this capacity, the RN will: - Participate and assist in weekly staff meetings and the orientation of new permanent and temporary staff - Appropriately apply nursing resources and participate and contribute in quality assurance and ongoing quality improvement and development efforts - Participate in daily care team activities that are conducive to the comfort and safety of patients, their families, and Pediatric Cardiology staff - Appropriately apply equipment and supplies and provide input to the care team and leadership team regarding practice needs and possible areas for improvement - Maintain and update clinical knowledge, skills, and yearly competencies based on MGH policies and procedures and current nursing education practices - Collaborate with the Pediatric Cardiology team, including the leadership team, on an ongoing basis to identify goals and learning experiences - Adhere to MGH policies and procedures, and to MGH Nursing guidelines in regards to ongoing training requirements Qualifications: - Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills - Comfortable and competent in speaking and presentation skills - Superb process improvement and team building methods and skills - Ability to work well both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team - Demonstrates intellectual independence and initiative along with the willingness to learn new skills - Exceptional organizational and time management skills with the ability to organize time and priorities effectively, asking for direction when appropriate - Flexibility and proven ability to handle multiple tasks and deadline pressures. Experience with common PC computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook - Requires a high level of empathy, compassion and confidentiality. - Ability to travel to community based clinical practice locations based upon divisional schedule Skills/abilities/competencies required: - BLS certification preferred - Provides competent age-appropriate nursing care - Proficient in administering injections to all age groups - Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively to families, all RN team members and multidisciplinary team. - Knowledge of HIPPA - Competent knowledge of Microsoft Office and use of electronic medical records LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS: - Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required - BLS strongly preferred; PALS preferred EDUCATION: Bachelor of Science in Nursing required with active license required Experience: - At least 2 years of ambulatory and/or inpatient nursing experience required - Prior pediatric cardiology and/or cardiology experience strongly preferred Working conditions: - Hospital based ambulatory practice and community based ambulatory practice locations - Ambulatory practice locations include MGH main campus as well as community-based locations - Travel will be required based upon schedule.
